Belgium Men’s National Volleyball Team on the international stage

Belgium’s Red Dragons have reached some of the best results in their history across the past decade. Fourth place at EuroVolley 2017 established the generation internationally, but the 2025 World Championship pushed the program further: Belgium beat defending champion Italy during pool play, advanced unbeaten from its group, swept Finland in the Round of 16 and reached the World Championship quarterfinals for the first time since 1970. Seventh place became Belgium’s best final position at the tournament.

The national team then entered another new level in 2026. Belgium made its Volleyball Nations League debut, finished 13th after a demanding 12-match preliminary phase and later returned to the EuroVolley quarterfinals for the first time since 2017. Emanuele Zanini continues to coach a side that combines the experience of captain Sam Deroo, Stijn D’Hulst and Pieter Coolman with a younger core headed by Ferre Reggers, Seppe Rotty, Simon Plaskie and Wout D’Heer.

Zanini has led the Red Dragons since 2022. His tenure covers Belgium’s return to the World Championship knockout rounds, the 2025 quarterfinal breakthrough and the qualification that brought the men into the VNL for the first time in 2026.

Deroo remains the national-team captain. His 2026 return carried additional significance after treatment for cancer interrupted his season. He recovered in time to rejoin the Red Dragons for their first VNL campaign and remained captain at EuroVolley later in the year.

Belgium’s ranking should be treated as a live snapshot. The official Volleyball World ranking page is the authoritative source and should be checked again whenever the profile receives a material update.

National Team History

Belgium was present near the beginning of both the European Championship and World Championship histories. The men’s team competed at the first EuroVolley in 1948 and made its World Championship debut in 1949.

The early decades produced regular appearances but few deep global runs. Belgium finished eighth at the 1970 World Championship, a result that remained its benchmark at the event for more than half a century. At the European level, Belgium spent long periods in and out of the final tournament rather than maintaining the continuous presence later generations would establish.

One of the most important steps in the modern revival came in 2013, when Belgium won the CEV European League under Dominique Baeyens. The Red Dragons completed an extraordinary undefeated campaign, winning all 14 matches and defeating Croatia 3–0 in the final in Marmaris.

That team already contained several names who would remain important for years. Sam Deroo and Pieter Coolman were part of the championship lineup, while Matthias Valkiers directed the offense at setter. Bram Van Den Dries was named MVP after leading the scoring in the final.

The European League title opened the door to stronger international competition. Belgium subsequently qualified for the FIVB World League and returned to the World Championship in 2014 after a long absence.

The program continued to mature over the following cycle. Belgium finished 10th at the 2018 World Championship, at the time its best modern result, after advancing beyond the opening stage.

The biggest European achievement came one year earlier.

EuroVolley 2017 and Belgium’s European Breakthrough

Belgium arrived at EuroVolley 2017 with an experienced group built around Deroo, Hendrik Tuerlinckx, Stijn D’Hulst, Pieter Verhees and several players who had developed through the earlier European League cycle.

The Red Dragons reached the semifinals for the first time. Russia stopped Belgium there, sending the team into the bronze-medal match against Serbia.

Belgium pushed Serbia to five sets and led two sets to one before the Serbians recovered to win 3–2. Fourth place nevertheless became Belgium’s best EuroVolley result and its best finish at a major senior championship at that point.

The achievement also changed expectations around the program. Belgium was no longer simply trying to qualify consistently for the European Championship; it had shown that it could reach the final weekend against the continent’s strongest teams.

The next several editions were less successful, however. Belgium exited in the Round of 16 in 2019 and did not immediately reproduce the 2017 run. That gap makes the return to the quarterfinals in 2026 particularly significant.

Olympic History

Belgium has appeared once in the men’s Olympic volleyball tournament.

The Red Dragons competed at Mexico City 1968, where Belgium finished eighth. The Olympic record included a 3–1 victory over Brazil, but Belgium ultimately ended the round-robin competition outside the medal positions.

No Belgian men’s team has returned to the Olympics since.

The current qualification system therefore gives the Zanini generation a chance to end a gap that will reach 60 years by Los Angeles 2028.

Belgium missed Europe’s first LA28 pathway when Poland won EuroVolley 2026 and secured the continental Olympic quota. The Red Dragons still have two possible routes: the 2027 global championship and the final ranking allocation after the 2028 VNL preliminary phase.

World Championship Record

Belgium first appeared at the men’s World Championship in 1949. The team competed intermittently through the following decades and finished eighth in 1970, which remained its best World Championship result until the current generation.

After a long period outside the competition, Belgium returned in 2014 and placed 17th. Four years later, the Red Dragons improved to 10th at the 2018 tournament.

They did not qualify for the 2022 championship, but the return in 2025 produced one of the defining tournaments in Belgian men’s volleyball history.

The 2025 World Championship Run

Belgium was drawn in Pool F with reigning world champion Italy, Ukraine and Algeria.

The Red Dragons opened by sweeping Ukraine 3–0. Seppe Rotty created major pressure from the service line, and Belgium immediately gained significant ranking value from beating a team positioned above it.

The second match produced a much larger result. Belgium defeated defending champion Italy 3–2, winning the first two sets before Italy recovered to force a tie-break. Belgium held its nerve in the fifth set, 15–13. Ferre Reggers scored 31 points.

Belgium then swept Algeria to finish the pool undefeated at 3–0 and take first place.

Finland awaited in the Round of 16. Belgium won 3–0, with Reggers scoring 20 points and Deroo adding 19, sending the Red Dragons into a World Championship quarterfinal for the first time in 55 years.

Italy received its rematch in the last eight and this time controlled the contest, winning 3–0.

Belgium nevertheless finished seventh, surpassing the 1970 eighth-place result and establishing a new World Championship best.

The tournament also clarified the changing center of Belgium’s offense. Deroo remained the captain and an important two-way outside hitter, but Reggers had become the primary high-volume scorer.

Belgium in the Volleyball Nations League

Belgium’s route into the VNL was unusual because it did not come through the former Challenger Cup promotion system.

The Red Dragons reached the final of the 2024 FIVB Challenger Cup in Linyi, beating their way to the championship match before China won the final 3–1. Because the Challenger Cup was discontinued, Belgium did not receive an automatic VNL place from that silver medal.

The opportunity arrived one year later.

After the 2025 VNL season, Belgium was the highest-ranked men’s national team not already in the competition. When the Netherlands lost its VNL place, Belgium was selected to enter for 2026, giving the Red Dragons their first season in the event.

VNL 2026

Belgium’s debut schedule immediately exposed the team to sustained top-level competition across three weeks.

The Red Dragons faced Brazil, Bulgaria, Serbia and Iran in Brasília; Poland, China, Germany and Türkiye in Gliwice; and Cuba, Italy, Japan and Canada in Osaka.

Belgium finished the preliminary phase 13th with four victories, eight defeats and 12 standings points. The team won 17 sets and lost 28.

That record kept Belgium away from the Final Eight, but the value of the season was broader than a single placement. The team played 12 matches against VNL-level opponents after several years without access to an annual global competition of comparable depth.

Reggers carried an enormous attacking workload. He finished the VNL with 268 points, including 246 in attack, averaging more than 22 points per match. His ability to score repeatedly against top international blocks confirmed the progression already visible at the 2025 World Championship.

Plaskie and Rotty provided more balanced wing options, while young libero Gorik Lantsoght received an extended run at the highest international level. The competition also gave Belgium opportunities to integrate younger players such as Warre Vandecruys and Lasse Van Genechten around an experienced core.

VNL participation is especially important during the LA28 cycle because every result affects the FIVB ranking that can ultimately decide Olympic qualification.

EuroVolley 2026

Belgium entered EuroVolley 2026 with much of the same core that had played through the World Championship and VNL cycles.

The Red Dragons competed in Pool C in Finland and finished first with a 4–1 record.

Belgium beat the Netherlands 3–1 in its opening match, lost a five-set contest to Finland, then defeated Estonia and Denmark before closing pool play with a 3–0 victory over Serbia.

The result gave Belgium 13 pool points and first place in the group.

Return to the Quarterfinals

Czechia awaited in the Round of 16.

Belgium lost the opening set 20–25 but then changed the match completely. The Red Dragons won the next three sets 26–24, 25–14 and 25–15. Their block produced 15 points, while Reggers led all scorers with 24.

The victory sent Belgium to its first EuroVolley quarterfinal since the fourth-place campaign in 2017.

Slovenia ended the run in Torino. The first two sets were competitive, both finishing 25–22 to Slovenia. Belgium responded by taking the third 25–20, but Slovenia controlled the fourth 25–13 and advanced 3–1.

Reggers again led Belgium with 23 points.

The quarterfinal exit prevented Belgium from earning one of Europe’s three direct places at the 2027 global championship. France, Finland and Slovenia took those tickets because semifinalist Poland was already qualified as host.

It also removed Belgium from the direct European route to LA28. Poland won the championship and claimed the Olympic quota.

Even without qualification from the tournament, another EuroVolley quarterfinal mattered. Belgium had returned to the European top eight nine years after the 2017 breakthrough while using a team that now combines members of that older generation with players born a decade later.

2026 Current National Team Selection

Belgium does not publish a separate annual senior pool in exactly the same format used by some national federations. The broadest current official senior registration available during the 2026 VNL cycle consists of the 14 active Volleyball World players plus four registered reserves. This section preserves that broader selection rather than substituting the later 14-player EuroVolley squad.

Current club affiliations use the latest federation or CEV club information available for the 2026–27 cycle.

This registration is broader than the lineup used at EuroVolley. Several experienced names who did not appear in the VNL registration returned for the European Championship, most notably Deroo, Pieter Coolman and Basil Dermaux.

That distinction matters for Belgium because Zanini has been managing both generation change and veteran reintegration rather than working with one permanent 14-player roster.

Zanini took charge in 2022 and became a central figure in Belgium’s renewed international progression. FIVB’s development program has also supported the Belgian national-team project during this period.

His tenure has involved more than maintaining the veteran side that had reached the EuroVolley semifinals in 2017. Players such as Reggers, Rotty, Plaskie, D’Heer and Lantsoght have moved into major roles, while Deroo, D’Hulst and Coolman continue to provide experience when available.

The combination has given Belgium continuity without freezing the lineup around one generation.

Playing Identity & Team Style

Belgium’s current offense starts with Ferre Reggers. The opposite has developed into one of Europe’s most productive high-volume attackers and carries a larger scoring responsibility than any other player in the present Belgian lineup.

His 2025 World Championship performance against Italy demonstrated that ceiling. Reggers produced 31 points in the five-set upset of the defending world champions. In the 2026 VNL, he followed with 268 points across Belgium’s 12 matches.

That does not mean Belgium simply sends every difficult ball to the opposite.

Stijn D’Hulst remains an important organizing presence at setter. His ability to involve the middle and keep the left side active is necessary if Belgium is to prevent opposing blockers from loading permanently toward Reggers.

The outside-hitter group offers different profiles. Deroo provides experience, size and reception stability. Rotty has developed into a more complete international scorer, while Plaskie adds serving pressure and a strong attacking option.

Belgium’s middle-blocker depth is another important feature. D’Heer brings experience from the Italian club game and stands 205 cm. Coolman remains a valuable veteran, while Fafchamps, Colson and younger options broaden the rotation.

Blocking was particularly visible in the EuroVolley Round of 16 against Czechia. Belgium produced 15 blocks and increasingly controlled the match once its serve began to reduce Czechia’s attacking options.

The VNL exposed the other side of the equation. Against the deepest teams in the world, Belgium cannot rely on winning every physical matchup. Reception quality and transition defense determine whether D’Hulst can use the full offense or whether Reggers is forced into repeated high-ball situations.

That makes Belgium less dependent on one stylistic identity than it was earlier in the development cycle. Its best volleyball combines reliable first contact, aggressive serving, an active middle and Reggers as the high-volume finisher rather than using him as the only solution.

Deroo connects nearly every major stage of Belgium’s modern development. He was already part of the European League champions in 2013, captained the generation that finished fourth at EuroVolley 2017 and remained the captain when Belgium reached the World Championship quarterfinals in 2025.

Reggers represents the shift toward the next generation. By 2025–26, Belgium’s primary terminal attack had moved toward the young opposite, allowing Deroo’s role to become more balanced between reception, leadership and scoring.

Key Matchups

Italy has become one of the most meaningful recent reference points. Belgium’s five-set victory over the defending world champions at the 2025 World Championship was one of the biggest wins in national-team history. Italy then eliminated Belgium in straight sets in the quarterfinal.

The two matches showed both Belgium’s ceiling and the difference between producing one elite performance and surviving a complete medal run.

Slovenia became another useful comparison at EuroVolley 2026. Belgium entered the quarterfinal after winning its pool and eliminating Czechia, but Slovenia controlled the decisive fourth set and moved into the semifinals for a fourth consecutive edition.

Serbia carries stronger historical EuroVolley context. Serbia denied Belgium a first European medal in the 2017 bronze match, winning 3–2 after Belgium had led two sets to one. Belgium answered nine years later by sweeping Serbia 3–0 in its final pool match at EuroVolley 2026.

The Netherlands is Belgium’s closest geographical volleyball comparison and has frequently occupied a similar qualification space. Belgium’s entry into the 2026 VNL came when the Red Dragons, as the highest-ranked eligible team outside the competition, took the place vacated by the relegated Netherlands.

Qualification Path & Tournament Cycle

Belgium did not secure a direct place at the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup through EuroVolley.

The European Championship awarded three places to the highest-finishing eligible teams. Poland was already qualified as the 2027 host, so France, Finland and Slovenia took Europe’s three continental tickets.

Belgium’s quarterfinal loss to Slovenia therefore moved the Red Dragons to the ranking pathway.

The first qualification stage left 17 of the 32 men’s World Cup teams confirmed: defending champion Italy, host Poland and 15 continental qualifiers. The remaining 15 places are awarded to the highest-ranked national teams not already qualified according to the relevant FIVB World Ranking.

Belgium is positioned strongly within that group at No. 17 because several teams above it have already qualified directly. Formal qualification should nevertheless be recorded only once the complete FIVB men’s field is officially published.

From 2027, the competition traditionally known as the FIVB Volleyball World Championship will officially carry the name FIVB Volleyball World Cup. It remains the continuation of the same championship lineage; Belgium’s 2025 seventh-place finish therefore belongs to the historical record of the event continuing in Poland.

Los Angeles 2028

Belgium is not yet qualified for the Olympics.

Poland claimed Europe’s direct quota by winning EuroVolley 2026.

The next opportunity comes at the 2027 global championship. The three highest-finishing teams that have not already qualified for Los Angeles will receive Olympic places.

The final three men’s Olympic quotas will then be distributed according to the FIVB World Ranking after the 2028 VNL preliminary phase.

For Belgium, ranking maintenance is therefore not a secondary target. VNL matches, the 2027 global championship and the 2028 VNL all form part of the same Olympic qualification sequence.

Current Status

Belgium finishes the 2026 national-team season with three recent results that give a clear picture of its level.

The 2025 World Championship provided the highest finish in program history: seventh, after victories over Ukraine, Italy, Algeria and Finland.

The 2026 VNL exposed Belgium to a much denser schedule. Four wins from 12 matches produced 13th place in the Red Dragons’ first season.

The 2026 EuroVolley then showed that Belgium remained capable of a deeper tournament run. Four victories in five pool matches delivered first place in Pool C, and the Round-of-16 win over Czechia put Belgium into the European quarterfinals before Slovenia ended the campaign.

Those results do not place Belgium among the small group of teams expected to medal at every major tournament. They do, however, show that the Red Dragons can now enter strong events with a realistic expectation of beating established international teams.

The next challenge is repeatability.

Reggers gives Belgium a genuine elite-level scoring reference. Deroo and D’Hulst still provide veteran leadership, while Rotty, Plaskie, D’Heer and the younger group reduce the risk of the national team becoming dependent on one aging generation.

The immediate objectives are now specific: secure formal confirmation of the 2027 World Cup place, remain competitive enough in the VNL to protect or improve the ranking, and create a realistic route toward Belgium’s first men’s Olympic appearance since 1968.
