Standing 200 cm, he brings a relatively uncommon physical profile to Japan’s wing rotation, combining a high attacking contact point with a serve that developed into an important part of his game during his university and early international years. Osaka lists his maximum reach at 350 cm, while current Japanese player data records a 330 cm block-jump reach.

Kai’s career accelerated unusually early. He entered Japan’s senior national-team registration group as a teenager in 2022, became part of the squad that won VNL bronze and the Asian Championship in 2023, played professionally in France with Paris Volley while still attending Senshu University, earned VNL silver in 2024 and made Japan’s Paris Olympic roster at age 20. He later joined Osaka Bluteon full-time, helping the club win the 2025–26 SV.League title and reach the 2025 FIVB Club World Championship final. Osaka renewed his contract for the 2026–27 season.

Player Information

Information

Details

Full Name

Masato Kai

Japanese Name

甲斐 優斗

Date of Birth

September 25, 2003

Nationality

Japanese

Born

Nobeoka, Miyazaki, Japan

High School

Nichinan Shintoku High School

University

Senshu University

Position

Outside Hitter

Height

200 cm

Weight

86 kg

Spike / Maximum Reach

350 cm

Block Jump Reach

330 cm

Standing Reach

255 cm

Dominant Hand

Right

Previous Club

Paris Volley

Current Club

Osaka Bluteon

Club Number

15

National Team

Japan Men’s National Volleyball Team

National-Team Number

15

Kai’s current club profile supplies his 200 cm height, 86 kg weight, right-handedness, 350 cm maximum reach and 255 cm standing reach, while the 2026 Japanese player profile published by Monthly Volleyball lists his block-jump reach at 330 cm. Osaka and the JVA both identify him as an outside hitter, and current national-team and SV.League listings use No. 15.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Kai was born in Nobeoka City in Miyazaki Prefecture into a family closely connected with volleyball. His mother, Terumi, played recreational “mama-san” volleyball, while his father had played corporate nine-player volleyball and later coached the Nobeoka Minami Volleyball Club. Kai began playing in the second grade of elementary school at the club coached by his father. His older brother, Koutaro Kai, also pursued the sport, and the brothers eventually played together at both Nichinan Shintoku High School and Senshu University.

That family environment gave volleyball an unusually central place in Kai’s childhood. He later recalled that conversations at home frequently revolved around training and matches. His father died while Kai was still in high school, while his mother continued to support his volleyball career closely, including following his matches when he later played abroad in France.

At Nichinan Shintoku High School, Kai developed into a nationally visible prospect. During his third year, the school reached the final four of the All Japan High School Volleyball Championship in its first appearance at the tournament, and Kai received an Outstanding Player Award. His combination of size and attacking ability soon pushed him beyond the normal high-school pathway: in 2022, after entering Senshu University, he was already included in Japan’s national-team registration group at 18.

Senshu gave him an important bridge between university volleyball and the senior international game. By 2023, time with Japan’s national team was changing more than his confidence. His older brother Koutaro observed that Kai returned to university with a more sophisticated serve—not simply hitting hard, but changing direction and pace and targeting specific areas of the court. Kai himself identified serve reception as an area he wanted to make more stable, an important detail for a 200 cm outside hitter expected to become more than a front-row scoring option.

The university chapter eventually produced a major team result. In December 2024, Senshu defeated Nippon Sport Science University 3–1 to win the All Japan Intercollegiate Championship for the first time. Osaka’s later career summary credits Kai with the tournament MVP and Best Server awards, adding them to the Best Scorer and Serve awards he earned in the 2024 Kanto University autumn league.

Club Career

First Overseas Experience with Paris Volley

Kai’s first professional experience arrived before he had finished university. Paris Volley brought the 20-year-old Japanese outside hitter to France in January 2024 for the remainder of the season, giving him his first sustained club experience outside Japan.

The move was significant because Paris did not simply view Kai as another technically polished Japanese wing. In Paris Volley’s official announcement of Masato Kai’s arrival, manager Yannick Bazin emphasized the different physical dimension a two-metre Japanese outside hitter could bring, particularly at the net and from the service line. That assessment closely matched the areas that were beginning to distinguish Kai internationally: attack height, serving pressure and the potential to give Japan a taller blocking matchup on the wing.

The French stint was relatively short, and Kai remained a Senshu University player. Nevertheless, it exposed him to a European professional environment well before graduation and added a different layer to a development path that was already moving between university competition and the Japanese national team.

Osaka Bluteon: From Special-Designated Player to Full Contract

Kai’s transition into Japan’s top professional league began in early 2025. Osaka Bluteon announced him as a special-designated player in January, with his registration taking effect in February. The arrangement allowed him to compete at SV.League level while still a Senshu University student.

He was not merely carried as a development prospect. SV.League records show 21 appearances and 99 points during the 2024–25 campaign, including 87 attack points, four blocks and eight aces. Osaka won the regular season before finishing third in the championship phase, and Kai was also part of the squad that reached the final of the 2025 AVC Men’s Champions League.

His special-designated spell formally ended in May, but it had already established the direction of his career. Osaka announced his full signing for the 2025–26 season on July 30, describing his height and power as central characteristics of his game.

The first full season produced a larger statistical workload. Kai appeared in 34 SV.League matches and scored 220 points—190 in attack, nine from blocks and 21 from serves. He recorded a 52.8% attack success rate across the competition and contributed 20 points over Osaka’s three-match championship final series against Suntory Sunbirds Osaka. Osaka recovered from losing the opening final to win the series 2–1 and claim the 2025–26 SV.League championship.

His season also included another valuable international club experience at the 2025 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in Brazil. Osaka became the first Japanese club to reach the competition’s final. Kai’s largest scoring performance came in the final pool match against Swehly Sports Club, when a rotated Osaka lineup gave him a larger role and he responded with 19 points: 15 kills, two blocks and two aces.

Osaka then defeated Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie in the semifinal before losing the final to Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia. Kai scored five points in that championship match, finishing the tournament as a member of the first Japanese club to reach a men’s Club World Championship final.

Osaka retained him for the next phase of that project. On June 2, 2026, the club confirmed Kai’s contract renewal for the 2026–27 season, and current SV.League and Osaka rosters continue to list him as No. 15.

Club Career Timeline

Seasons

Team

Country

2022–2026

Senshu University

Japan

2024

Paris Volley

France

2025

Osaka Bluteon — special-designated player

Japan

2025–present

Osaka Bluteon

Japan

National Team Career

Kai’s senior national-team story began before his full breakthrough. The JVA’s 2022 registration list included the 18-year-old Senshu University freshman in Japan’s extended men’s squad. His more substantial exposure to senior international volleyball followed in 2023, when he joined the group through the VNL, Asian Championship and Olympic qualification campaign.

Japan’s 2023 VNL run ended with a bronze medal, the country’s first men’s VNL medal. Kai did not yet carry the offensive volume of Japan’s established outside hitters, but the season introduced him to high-level international volleyball and increasingly gave him opportunities from the service line. Japan beat Italy in five sets in the bronze-medal match to finish third.

The Asian Championship in Iran later that summer gave Kai more visible court time. Against Uzbekistan, he started and contributed from the service line as Japan progressed through the tournament. Japan ultimately won the Asian title, and Senshu University specifically recognized Kai as a member of the championship team.

During the 2023 Olympic qualifying tournament, Kai was still frequently used as a serving or rotation option rather than as a primary starter. Even so, the tournament demonstrated why Japan wanted the young outside hitter in the senior system. He saw action against elite opposition and was part of the squad that secured qualification for Paris 2024.

His role expanded in the 2024 VNL. Volleyball World recorded 65 points for Kai during that edition: 56 in attack, one block and eight from serves. Japan went on to finish second, earning its first VNL silver medal.

Kai then made Japan’s Olympic roster for Paris. At 20, he was the youngest member of the squad. His court role at the Olympics was limited compared with Japan’s established wing rotation, but simply reaching the Olympic team less than two years after entering the senior national setup marked the speed of his progression. Japan reached the quarterfinals and was officially ranked seventh.

He remained in Japan’s plans through the next cycle. Kai was selected for the 2025 World Championship roster and returned for the 2026 national-team season. The JVA’s 2026 national-team list identifies him as a 200 cm outside hitter from Osaka Bluteon, while Volleyball World lists him as No. 15 during the 2026 VNL.

The 2026 VNL provided another useful snapshot of his role. Kai scored 23 points across the competition, but most came in one major opportunity against Belgium on July 17. He produced 18 points—16 kills, one block and one ace—in Japan’s 3–0 victory. Japan eventually reached the medal round before losing to Slovenia in the bronze-medal match and finishing fourth.

Playing Style & Strengths

The clearest starting point for Kai’s game is his size. At 200 cm with a 350 cm maximum reach, he gives Japan an outside hitter capable of attacking from a higher contact point than many of the wing players traditionally associated with the national team. Osaka itself describes his preferred strength as using his height on the spike.

That physical profile affects several phases. In attack, Kai can stay high through the swing and offers setters a useful target when the ball is pushed toward the antenna or when a rally moves away from ideal tempo. His height also gives him the potential to close more space at the block against large international opposites and outside hitters. Paris Volley highlighted exactly those physical advantages when it recruited him in 2024.

Serving, however, has become just as important to his identity. The development was already visible during his Senshu years. In a 4years interview on Kai’s development after returning from the national team, his older brother Koutaro described how Masato had learned to vary the direction and pace of his serve rather than relying solely on power. That skill translated into measurable scoring value: Kai registered eight aces during the 2024 VNL and 21 aces across the 2025–26 SV.League season.

His 2025–26 club numbers also show that his scoring is not built entirely around being a serving specialist. He produced 190 attack points in 360 attempts, a 52.8% success rate in SV.League’s official statistics. The 19-point Club World Championship match against Swehly further illustrated what can happen when he receives a larger attacking volume.

The longer-term development point is the complete outside-hitter workload. Kai acknowledged during university that serve reception needed to become more stable. That remains an important part of his ceiling: his height, high contact and serving already differentiate him, but the more consistently he can combine those strengths with the passing and transition demands of an international outside hitter, the easier it becomes to keep that physical advantage on court for complete rotations rather than isolated tactical assignments.

Major Achievements

Selected National Team Honors

Year

Competition

Result

2023

Volleyball Nations League

Bronze medal

2023

Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship

Gold medal

2023

Olympic Qualification Tournament / World Cup

Olympic qualification secured with Japan

2024

Volleyball Nations League

Silver medal

2024

Paris Olympic Games

7th place

Japan’s VNL finishes are recorded by Volleyball World, while Kai’s participation in the 2023 Asian championship-winning squad and Paris Olympic team is documented by Senshu University, the JVA and the JOC.

Selected Club Honors

Season / Year

Competition

Result

2024–25

SV.League Regular Season

1st place with Osaka Bluteon

2025

AVC Men’s Champions League

Runner-up with Osaka Bluteon

2025

FIVB Men’s Club World Championship

Runner-up with Osaka Bluteon

2025–26

SV.League

Champion with Osaka Bluteon

The 2025 Club World Championship silver was particularly notable because Osaka became the first Japanese club to reach the men’s tournament final.

Selected University Honors

Year

Competition

Result

2024

All Japan Intercollegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship

Champion with Senshu University

Senshu’s 2024 title was the university’s first men’s championship in the event.

Selected Individual Awards

Year

Competition

Award

2022

All Japan High School Volleyball Championship

Outstanding Player Award

2024

Kanto University Men’s Division I Autumn League

Best Scorer

2024

Kanto University Men’s Division I Autumn League

Serve Award

2024

All Japan Intercollegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship

Most Valuable Player

2024

All Japan Intercollegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship

Best Server

Personal Life & Interests

Volleyball runs through Kai’s family. His parents both played, and his father coached the Nobeoka Minami Volleyball Club where Masato began playing in elementary school. His older brother Koutaro also became a high-level player, and the brothers spent years following the same path through school and university volleyball. Masato has spoken about how having his brother beside him created a natural support system: when one struggled, the other could take on more responsibility.

Kai’s public personality is comparatively understated. Osaka’s official player profile describes him as quiet and lists gaming and bowling among his interests. He names navy as a favorite color, Mrs. GREEN APPLE among the music he listens to, coffee as a preferred drink and tamagoyaki as a dish he can make himself. The same profile gives his nickname as “Kai-kun.”

Those details fit the contrast that has followed him through his early career: away from the court he presents as reserved, while his playing identity is built around a conspicuous physical trait—the height and reach of a two-metre outside hitter in a Japanese system known for speed, control and technical precision.

Gear & Equipment

Kai has a documented apparel relationship with MoveSport. The brand’s official athlete roster includes him among its contracted volleyball athletes and emphasizes the height and power of his attacking game. MoveSport’s official contracted-athlete profile featuring Masato Kai

The documented partnership is most useful as an apparel and athlete-brand reference. MoveSport’s athlete page does not establish a single fixed competition shoe model for Kai, so a particular shoe should not be treated as a permanent part of his equipment profile on that basis alone.

Where Is Masato Kai Playing Now?

As of September 2026, Kai is an active outside hitter for Osaka Bluteon. The club renewed his contract on June 2 for the 2026–27 season, retaining him as No. 15 after the team’s SV.League championship season. He is also listed on the current SV.League roster alongside Osaka’s established group of Japanese and international players.

He also remains active with Japan. Kai is on the JVA’s 2026 senior national-team list and was selected in September for Japan’s friendly matches against Qatar in Iwate, appearing on the match roster on both September 20 and 21.

The Japanese Olympic Committee’s athlete profile, updated for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, lists Osaka Bluteon as his current affiliation and records him as scheduled to compete in the men’s volleyball tournament. That makes his late-2026 status clear: he remains part of both Osaka’s next domestic campaign and Japan’s active senior-team plans.

Recent Performance Snapshot

Competition

Performance Snapshot

2025–26 SV.League

34 matches, 220 points, 190 attack points, 9 blocks and 21 aces; Osaka Bluteon won the championship

2025 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship

Scored 19 points against Swehly Sports Club; Osaka finished runner-up

2026 Volleyball Nations League

23 total points; season-high 18 points against Belgium; Japan finished 4th

The numbers illustrate the context of Kai’s current career rather than a simple linear rise in scoring volume. His 18-point performance against Belgium nevertheless showed that he can convert a larger national-team opportunity into a high-output match when the rotation opens for him.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall is Masato Kai?

Masato Kai is 200 cm tall.
