Liga. Born in São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1989, he represented the Brazil Men’s National Volleyball Team from 2017 through the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle and became one of the team’s primary serve-reception and floor-defense specialists. His international career includes gold at the 2019 FIVB World Cup and the 2021 Volleyball Nations League, with Hoss named Best Libero at both tournaments.

Most of his club career was spent in Brazil before he moved to Europe in his thirties, first with Chaumont VB 52 in France and then Bogdanka LUK Lublin in Poland. His three seasons in Lublin produced a CEV Challenge Cup, Polish championship, Polish SuperCup and Polish Cup. After the 2025/26 season, he remained in Poland but moved to Avia Świdnik for the next stage of his club career.

Player Information

Attribute

Information

Full Name

Thales Gustavo Hoss

Known As

Thales Hoss, Thales

Date of Birth

April 26, 1989

Place of Birth

São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Nationality

Brazilian

Position

Libero

Height

190 cm

Listed Weight

82 kg

Listed Spike Reach

320 cm

Current Club

PZL LEONARDO Avia Świdnik

Current League

TAURON 1. Older Brazilian profiles occasionally listed him at 187 cm, while current TAURON 1. Liga data also lists him at 82 kg with a 320 cm attack reach. The current competition-specific figures are used here.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Hoss grew up in São Leopoldo in southern Brazil. His introduction to volleyball was closely connected to his older brother, Jonatas, who is seven years older. As a child, Thales followed his brother into futsal and then made the same switch when Jonatas began playing volleyball.

A private school in São Leopoldo with an established volleyball program became an important part of his development. Hoss earned a scholarship through volleyball, allowing him to study there without tuition fees while training and competing in the sport.

He did not originally play libero. Hoss began as an outside hitter and continued in that role through part of his youth development. The change came during a Brazilian youth national-team camp, when a coach moved him to libero in training and then tested him there in a practice match. Hoss performed well enough in serve reception that the coach told him the position change would become permanent.

Hoss later described that decision as one of the defining moments of his career in a wide-ranging 2024 interview with Wprost. He became the starting libero through successive Brazilian youth teams and eventually progressed into senior professional volleyball.

The transition to the adult game was not immediate. Hoss has recalled joining a major senior team at around 21, playing well through the regular season and then struggling in the playoffs. He subsequently returned to a backup-libero role and had to rebuild his place in the professional game.

Another important developmental period came with SESI São Paulo in 2014/15, where he shared the libero position with Sérgio “Serginho” Dutra Santos. Hoss already considered his technical fundamentals strong, but he credits the Olympic champion with teaching him more about communication, court positioning, coverage and leadership. He later said that the season changed the way he understood the libero position.

Club Career

Hoss’s senior career began in Brazil with Sport Club Ulbra in 2007/08. He moved to Sada Cruzeiro the following season before joining the Florianópolis project, which competed under several sponsor-driven names during his four-year stay.

The Florianópolis period brought his first major senior titles. Hoss was part of the team that won the 2009 South American Club Championship and the 2009/10 Brazilian Superliga. Those seasons also gave him regular experience at a time when Brazilian club volleyball contained a deep group of established national-team players.

He moved through several Brazilian organizations over the next four seasons: JF Vôlei, SESI São Paulo, Voleisul/Paquetá Esportes and Canoas Vôlei. The SESI season was particularly important for his development because of the opportunity to train alongside Serginho, even though Hoss spent much of the year as the second libero.

A longer period of stability arrived when he joined Funvic Taubaté in 2017. The move coincided with his breakthrough into Brazil’s senior national team and placed him on a roster competing consistently for major domestic trophies. Taubaté won the Brazilian Superliga in 2018/19, with Hoss selected as the league’s Best Libero, and won the competition again in 2020/21.

The project relocated from Taubaté to Natal ahead of 2021/22. Hoss remained with the organization for that season, playing for Funvic Educacoin Natal, before the club’s financial difficulties brought that chapter of his career to an end.

At 33, Hoss accepted his first professional contract outside Brazil. He joined Chaumont VB 52 in France for 2022/23. Moving abroad as a libero presented a particular challenge because clubs often reserve foreign-player places for high-scoring positions, something Hoss himself has discussed when reflecting on his European career.

One season in France was enough to open another opportunity. In 2023, Bogdanka LUK Lublin brought him to Poland’s PlusLiga, beginning what became his most successful European club period.

His first Lublin season established him as the team’s starting libero, but the major trophies arrived in 2024/25. Bogdanka defeated Cucine Lube Civitanova to win the CEV Challenge Cup, the first major European trophy in the Polish club’s history. Lublin then defeated Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie in the PlusLiga finals to become Polish champion for the first time.

The trophy sequence continued into 2025/26. Bogdanka won the Polish SuperCup and then the 2026 Polish Cup, where Hoss was selected as Best Libero of the final tournament. Lublin returned to the PlusLiga final later that season but lost the five-match series to Zawiercie, finishing as Polish runner-up.

That final ended Hoss’s three-year stay with Bogdanka. He left having been part of the club’s first Challenge Cup triumph, first national championship, first Polish SuperCup and first Polish Cup.

For 2026/27, he remained in the Lublin region but moved from the top-tier PlusLiga to PZL LEONARDO Avia Świdnik in the TAURON 1. Liga. The transfer gives Avia an experienced libero with two Olympic appearances and more than a decade of top-level senior volleyball behind him.

Club Career Timeline

Seasons

Team

Country

2007–2008

Sport Club Ulbra

Brazil

2008–2009

Sada Cruzeiro Vôlei

Brazil

2009–2013

Cimed / Florianópolis

Brazil

2013–2014

JF Vôlei

Brazil

2014–2015

SESI São Paulo

Brazil

2015–2016

Voleisul/Paquetá Esportes

Brazil

2016–2017

Canoas Vôlei

Brazil

2017–2021

Funvic Taubaté

Brazil

2021–2022

Funvic Educacoin Natal

Brazil

2022–2023

Chaumont VB 52

France

2023–2026

Bogdanka LUK Lublin

Poland

2026–present

PZL LEONARDO Avia Świdnik

Poland

National Team Career

Hoss reached Brazil’s senior national team later than many international players. He was already 28 when Renan Dal Zotto gave him his first senior opportunity during the 2017 World League.

His debut came during the opening week of that competition in Italy. Hoss quickly made an impression in serve reception and, after appearing in five of Brazil’s first six matches, led the tournament’s passing statistics at that stage with 62.3% efficiency.

Brazil went on to take silver in the 2017 World League. Later that year, Hoss was also part of the team that won the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in Japan.

His place in Brazil’s libero rotation became more established over the next two seasons. At the 2018 FIVB World Championship, Brazil reached the final before losing to Poland, giving Hoss his first World Championship medal.

The strongest result of his 2019 international season came at the FIVB World Cup in Japan. Brazil completed the tournament undefeated and won gold, while Hoss was selected as Best Libero in the tournament’s individual awards. It was an important confirmation that the late senior-team debut had not prevented him from becoming Brazil’s first-choice libero at major international events.

Brazil’s next global title came in the 2021 Volleyball Nations League. The South Americans defeated Poland in the final to win their first VNL championship, and Hoss again received the tournament’s Best Libero award.

A few weeks later, he made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021. Brazil reached the semifinals but lost to the Russian Olympic Committee and then Argentina in the bronze-medal match, finishing fourth.

Hoss remained Brazil’s main libero through the next World Championship cycle. At the 2022 FIVB World Championship, Brazil won bronze and his defensive production was among the tournament’s clearest statistical features. Volleyball World recorded him with 59 digs, the highest total in the competition. Thirteen came against Iran and another 12 in the semifinal against Poland.

Brazil’s long run of South American titles ended in 2023 when Argentina defeated the hosts in Recife. Brazil finished second, but Hoss was selected as Best Libero in the tournament’s Dream Team.

His final national-team season came in 2024. Hoss played throughout Brazil’s VNL campaign and was then selected as the only libero on the Olympic roster for Paris. It was his second Olympic Games. Brazil advanced from its pool before losing to the United States in the quarterfinals and finished eighth.

After Paris, Hoss was among several longtime Brazilian players who stepped away from the national team. Brazil began its 2025 rebuild without him, bringing an end to a senior international career that had started in 2017 and included two Olympics, two World Championship medals and major titles at the World Cup and VNL.

Playing Style & Strengths

Hoss’s career shows how the libero position can change as a player gains experience. Early in his senior years, defense was one of the most noticeable parts of his game, but his serve reception became increasingly important as he established himself with Brazil.

That development was already visible during the 2017 World League, when he moved to the top of the early reception rankings during his first senior international tournament. A libero in Brazil’s system has to do more than keep the serve in play: the quality and location of the first contact determine how freely the setter can use the middle and create one-on-one situations at the antennas.

Hoss’s reception mechanics are built around early reading and a relatively quiet platform. Rather than making every difficult ball look spectacular, his value often comes from arriving behind the ball in time and producing a controllable first contact. That is especially important against jump servers who can change direction late.

His floor defense is the other major part of his profile. The 59 digs at the 2022 World Championship illustrate his ability to stay involved over a long tournament, but individual rallies also depend on reading the opposing attacker before contact. For a libero, the first movement often comes from recognizing the setter’s options, the block’s positioning and the hitter’s approach rather than reacting only after the ball has been struck.

The season alongside Serginho at SESI also shaped the less visible part of Hoss’s game. He has explained that he learned to communicate more continuously, organize positioning around him and take responsibility for coverage even when he was not the player making the first contact. Those habits became increasingly important as he moved into a leadership role with Brazil.

His most recent complete PlusLiga season still showed a substantial reception workload. In 2025/26, Hoss handled 387 recorded receptions across 26 league matches and 103 sets. Official PlusLiga statistics listed him at 50.39% positive reception, 27.91% perfect reception and 35.92% reception efficiency, placing him among the competition’s leading receivers.

For a libero, those numbers need context: opponents can alter their serving strategy specifically to avoid a strong passer, and raw reception percentages do not measure every defensive decision. They do, however, show that Hoss continued handling significant first-contact responsibility deep into his thirties.

Major Achievements

Selected National Team Honors

Year

Competition

Result

2017

FIVB World League

Silver

2017

FIVB World Grand Champions Cup

Gold

2018

FIVB World Championship

Silver

2019

FIVB World Cup

Gold

2021

Volleyball Nations League

Gold

2021

South American Championship

Gold

2022

FIVB World Championship

Bronze

2023

South American Championship

Silver

Hoss also represented Brazil at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, finishing fourth and eighth respectively.

Selected Club Honors

Year / Season

Competition

Result

Team

2009

South American Club Championship

Champion

Cimed / Florianópolis

2009/10

Brazilian Superliga

Champion

Cimed / Florianópolis

2018/19

Brazilian Superliga

Champion

Funvic Taubaté

2020/21

Brazilian Superliga

Champion

Funvic Taubaté

2024/25

CEV Challenge Cup

Champion

Bogdanka LUK Lublin

2024/25

Polish Championship

Champion

Bogdanka LUK Lublin

2025

Polish SuperCup

Champion

Bogdanka LUK Lublin

2026

Polish Cup

Champion

Bogdanka LUK Lublin

2025/26

Polish Championship

Runner-up

Bogdanka LUK Lublin

The Lublin period was especially productive because four of those trophies came within roughly a year, beginning with the Challenge Cup in March 2025 and continuing through the 2026 Polish Cup.

Selected Individual Awards

Year / Season

Competition

Award

2018/19

Brazilian Superliga

Best Libero

2019

FIVB World Cup

Best Libero

2021

Volleyball Nations League

Best Libero

2023

South American Championship

Best Libero

2026

Polish Cup

Best Libero

The World Cup and VNL awards are the strongest international markers of Hoss’s peak years with Brazil, while the 2026 Polish Cup recognition came seven years after his World Cup honor and late in his European club career.

Family & Life Away from Volleyball

Family has played an important role in Hoss’s career decisions. He lives with his wife and two children, and he has described their well-being as one of the main factors he considers when deciding where to play. During his time in Lublin, he spoke positively about the club helping his family settle into the city and arrange schooling for the children.

His son has shown more interest in football than volleyball. Hoss has joked that he tried to encourage volleyball while the family was living in France, but accepted that football was the sport his son preferred.

His own older brother, Jonatas, had the opposite influence. Hoss followed Jonatas from futsal into volleyball as a child and has said that he might not have entered the sport without his brother’s example.

Hoss also has an unusual public profile for a modern international athlete: he deliberately does not maintain social-media accounts. In his 2024 Wprost interview, he explained that staying off social media helped shield him from some of the noise surrounding comparisons with Serginho when he first entered Brazil’s senior team.

That choice is why no Instagram, X or Facebook account is listed in his Player Information. It is not an unverified missing handle; Hoss has publicly stated that he prefers not to use social media.

Where Is Thales Hoss Playing Now?

Thales Hoss plays for PZL LEONARDO Avia Świdnik in Poland’s TAURON 1. Liga for the 2026/27 season. He wears No. 17, the same number associated with much of his international and European club career. Current league records list him at 190 cm and 82 kg.

The move followed three seasons with Bogdanka LUK Lublin, where Hoss had played at the top level of Polish volleyball and collected the Challenge Cup, Polish championship, SuperCup and Polish Cup. Avia competes one division below the PlusLiga, making the transfer a change in competitive level while allowing him to continue his career in the same region of Poland.

Hoss started Avia’s opening league match against Fort UAM Poznań in September 2026, with the club highlighting his defensive contribution during a five-set victory.

Internationally, his status is different. Hoss stepped away from the Brazil Men’s National Volleyball Team after the Paris 2024 Olympics and was not part of Brazil’s 2025–26 rebuild. He remains an active professional club player rather than a current Brazilian national-team libero.

Recent Performance Snapshot

Competition

Matches

Sets

Receptions

Positive Reception

Perfect Reception

Reception Efficiency

2025/26 PlusLiga — Bogdanka LUK Lublin

26

103

387

50.39%

27.91%

35.92%

The 2025/26 figures came during Hoss’s final PlusLiga season with Lublin.
