Italy’s SuperLega is ready to return, and the 2026–27 season will not ease into its schedule quietly. The first match is set for Saturday, October 17, when Rana Verona host Cucine Lube Civitanova, before the rest of the opening round follows on Sunday. Defending champions Sir Susa Scai Perugia start on the road against Acqua Sant’Anna Cuneo, while Valsa Group Modena welcome Itas Trentino in another early meeting between teams expected to operate near the top end of the league.

The official calendar originally frames the opening round around Sunday, October 18, but Verona–Lube has been brought forward to Saturday at 18:00 local time. Lube confirmed the updated date in its final preparations for the new campaign, making that matchup the actual starting point of the SuperLega season.

The six-match program immediately gives the new season several useful reference points. Verona and Lube meet after both played major roles in last season’s playoff picture, Modena and Trentino begin against established high-level opposition, and Perugia will have to open its defense of the championship away from home. Promoted Tinet Prata di Pordenone, meanwhile, get their first SuperLega test at home against Monza.

Perugia start again as the team everyone has to chase

Sir Susa Scai Perugia enter the season with the clearest possible benchmark behind them. They finished first in the 2025–26 regular season with a 20–2 record and 58 points, then went through the playoffs without losing a series match: 3–0 against Vero Volley Monza in the quarterfinals, 3–0 against Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza in the semifinals and 3–0 in the championship series against Lube.

The final itself was more competitive than the series score suggests. Perugia won Game 1 in straight sets, took Game 2 in four in Civitanova and then completed the title run with another four-set victory at home on May 6. That secured the club’s third Italian championship and added another major trophy to a season in which Perugia had already won the Club World Championship and the Italian Supercoppa.

That history makes the opening trip to Cuneo more than a routine first-round assignment. Perugia are beginning from the position every rival wants to take away from them, while the first weeks will establish how quickly last season’s dominance carries into a new competitive cycle.

Volleyball World lists Perugia among the central contenders again alongside Trentino, Lube, Verona, Modena and Piacenza. The league also retains much of the international star power that has made SuperLega a reference point in the men’s club game, including names such as Simone Giannelli, Alessandro Michieletto, Micah Christenson and Kamil Semeniuk.

Verona–Lube gives the season an immediate high-level test

The Saturday opener is particularly useful because neither Verona nor Lube enters the season as an anonymous middle-of-the-table opponent.

Lube reached last season’s championship series after finishing only sixth in the regular season, eliminating defending champions Trentino in the quarterfinals and regular-season runners-up Verona in the semifinals before finally running into Perugia. That playoff path showed how little the regular-season order can guarantee once the postseason begins.

Verona, by contrast, had finished second behind Perugia in the regular season. Their opening meeting therefore pairs a team that produced one of last season’s strongest 22-match campaigns with the team that ultimately survived deeper into the playoffs.

It is too early to treat one match as evidence of where either side will finish in 2026–27. What the fixture does provide is an immediate test against meaningful opposition, rather than a comfortable opening from which conclusions can be delayed for several weeks.

Modena–Trentino adds another difficult matchup on Sunday

Sunday’s late match between Modena and Trentino creates a second opening-round game with substantial competitive interest.

Trentino entered the previous postseason as defending Italian champions but were eliminated by Lube in a three-match quarterfinal sweep. Modena also failed to reach the semifinals, losing its quarterfinal series to Piacenza. Those results leave both clubs beginning the new season with obvious incentive to establish a stronger playoff trajectory from the outset.

The opening weekend will not answer whether either side has closed the gap to Perugia. It can, however, offer the first meaningful look at how their new season structures hold up against another established contender.

Prata enters a 12-team league with little room for a slow start

Tinet Prata di Pordenone are the new arrival in the SuperLega field and open at home against Vero Volley Monza. Their presence completes the 12-team lineup for a regular season scheduled across 22 rounds through the end of February 2027.

That 12-team format keeps every regular-season result relevant. The top eight teams advance to the Scudetto playoffs, while the first half of the campaign also determines qualification for the Coppa Italia quarterfinals. The league’s asymmetric calendar means the return fixtures will not simply reproduce the first half in the same sequence.

For a promoted team, that structure leaves limited space for viewing the first weeks purely as an adjustment period. Points taken in October and November carry the same table value as those won later, even if expectations differ sharply between a newcomer and clubs built to challenge for the title.

The first round begins a crowded race, not a verdict

Perugia deserve to begin as the reference point because their 2025–26 results established one. But the opening weekend is better viewed as the first measurement of the new season than as an early attempt to identify a champion.

Verona–Lube starts that process on Saturday. Perugia then take the championship into Cuneo, Trentino visit Modena, Piacenza travel to Padova, Milano open at Cisterna and Prata make their SuperLega debut at home to Monza.

Round two follows on October 25, including Piacenza–Modena and Monza–Verona, while Perugia play their first home league match against Prata. By early November the calendar becomes even denser, with a midweek round on November 4 and Perugia–Trentino scheduled for November 8.

That gives the league little time for a prolonged settling-in period. The 2026–27 SuperLega season begins with several direct tests among ambitious teams — and with the rest of the field once again starting from the same central question: who can make Perugia’s path to another Scudetto more difficult this time?
