The current group is undergoing a generational change after the retirement or reduced national-team involvement of several established players from the Paris 2024 cycle. Nikola Jovović, appointed captain at the beginning of 2026, has become the principal link between that older core and a younger selection that increasingly featured players such as Lazar Marinović, Vuk Kulpinac, Nikola Brborić and Veljko Mašulović during the season. CEV described the process directly as a transition between generations.

The first year of that transition produced mixed results. Serbia finished 11th in the 2026 VNL preliminary phase, reached the EuroVolley round of 16 but was eliminated 3-0 by Slovenia, and ended the continental championship 13th overall. Its FIVB World Ranking fell to No. 18 in the October 1 snapshot. The season nevertheless preserved an important route forward: Serbia secured qualification for the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup through the final ranking allocation, giving the team a direct opportunity to compete for one of the remaining Los Angeles 2028 Olympic places.

That current uncertainty sits alongside one of European volleyball’s deepest historical records. In CEV and FIVB statistical treatment, Serbia’s national-team lineage includes the Yugoslav and Serbia and Montenegro eras. It contains Olympic gold in 2000, a World Championship silver in 1998, the independent Serbian team’s 2010 World Championship bronze, the 2016 World League title and three European championships across the lineage in 2001, 2011 and 2019. The modern challenge is to build another competitive generation without treating those earlier results as a guarantee of present strength.

Team Information

Field

Detail

Official Team Name

Serbia Men’s National Volleyball Team

Local Name

Muška odbojkaška reprezentacija Srbije

Country

Serbia

Gender

Men

National Federation

Odbojkaški savez Srbije — Volleyball Federation of Serbia (OSSRB)

FIVB Team Code

SRB

Confederation

CEV — Europe

Head Coach

Gheorghe Crețu

Captain

Nikola Jovović

FIVB World Ranking

No. 18 — October 1, 2026 snapshot — View full FIVB rankings

Current Cycle

2026–2028 / LA28 cycle

2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup

Qualified

Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

Not yet qualified

Olympic Best Result

Gold — Sydney 2000, predecessor Yugoslav team lineage

World Championship Best Result

Silver — 1998, predecessor Yugoslav team; Serbia-era best: Bronze — 2010

FIVB World League Best Result

Champion — 2016

VNL Best Result

5th — 2018

EuroVolley Best Result

Champion — 2001, 2011, 2019 across the recognized lineage

Federation Website

Volleyball Federation of Serbia

Federation Instagram

@ossrb

The official Volleyball World ranking is the authoritative live ranking source. Serbia’s October 1, 2026 snapshot places the team at No. 18 with 224.83 points, five positions lower than the previous August snapshot. Because the ranking is dynamic and feeds both competition seeding and the eventual LA28 ranking pathway, it should be treated as dated information rather than a permanent team attribute.

Gheorghe Crețu remains Serbia’s head coach in the current official competition record. OSSRB named him as the first coach when announcing the EuroVolley squad on September 7, and the CEV event registration also lists him as head coach. No official federation announcement replacing him was published during the final research pass, so post-EuroVolley speculation about his future does not change the current profile status.

Nikola Jovović’s captaincy is clearer. CEV reported that the setter was appointed captain at the beginning of the 2026 season and described him as the bridge between Serbia’s established medal-winning generation and the younger players now entering senior international volleyball.

National Team History

Serbian men’s volleyball history extends through several political and sporting identities, so historical records need to be scoped carefully. CEV treats the modern Serbia team as the successor to teams that previously competed as Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro, particularly when presenting long-term EuroVolley participation and medal totals. That lineage provides important historical context, but the achievements of different state teams should not be presented as though every medal was won by the present Republic of Serbia under its current name.

The late 1990s and early 2000s produced the generation that established the modern Balkan program at the highest international level. Nikola and Vladimir Grbić, Ivan Miljković, Andrija Gerić, Goran Vujević and their contemporaries helped the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia win Olympic bronze in Atlanta in 1996 and Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000. The same competitive era included a World Championship silver medal in 1998.

Success continued at continental level. Yugoslavia won EuroVolley in 2001, while the independent Serbian team added another title in 2011. Between those championships came a long period of regular European podium contention, with the national-team lineage collecting medals across multiple editions. CEV’s historical profile counted eleven European Championship medals before EuroVolley 2019.

The independent Serbian team reached another global podium at the 2010 World Championship, winning bronze. The next major global title arrived in the annual international competition: Serbia won the 2016 FIVB World League, defeating Brazil in the final and closing a long pursuit of a trophy after several previous runner-up finishes. Volleyball World’s historical national-team statistics recognize 2016 as Serbia’s World League championship season.

EuroVolley 2019 became the last major championship title of the established modern generation. Serbia arrived after failing to secure an Olympic place in its first qualification opportunity, changed coaches shortly before the tournament and then went unbeaten through the European Championship. In the final in Paris, Serbia recovered from losing the opening set to defeat Slovenia 3-1. Aleksandar Atanasijević led the scoring, while Uroš Kovačević was later named tournament MVP. The victory was the third men’s European title in the recognized lineage after 2001 and 2011 and the 12th EuroVolley medal overall.

The years after that title were less successful. Serbia did not add another senior men’s medal through the Paris 2024 cycle, and several members of the 2019 championship generation gradually left the national-team structure. By 2026, CEV was explicitly describing Serbia as a team in generational transition. Jovović, Marko Ivović and Dražen Luburić were among the few experienced figures still training alongside a much younger group.

Olympic History

Serbia’s broader Olympic lineage includes two major medals: bronze in Atlanta in 1996 and gold in Sydney in 2000, both won by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Sydney championship remains the highest Olympic achievement associated with the program’s recognized predecessor history.

The independent Serbian men’s team competed at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 but then missed Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. It returned to the Olympic tournament at Paris 2024 through the FIVB ranking pathway.

Paris proved difficult. Serbia was drawn into Pool A with France, Slovenia and Canada. It recorded one victory and two defeats, collecting three points, but finished third in the pool and did not reach the quarterfinals. Volleyball World’s official final standings placed Serbia ninth.

Olympic Milestone

Result

Atlanta 1996

Bronze — predecessor Yugoslav team

Sydney 2000

Gold — predecessor Yugoslav team

London 2012

Olympic participation

Paris 2024

9th

Los Angeles 2028

Not yet qualified

Serbia did not claim Europe’s direct Olympic place in 2026. Poland won EuroVolley and joined host United States and the other continental champions already qualified for Los Angeles. Serbia therefore has two remaining pathways: finishing among the three highest eligible non-qualified teams at the 2027 global championship, or taking one of the final three places through the FIVB World Ranking after the preliminary phase of the 2028 VNL.

World Championship & Other Global Competitions

The strongest World Championship result in Serbia’s predecessor lineage is the silver medal from 1998. The independent Serbian team later won bronze at the 2010 World Championship, establishing its own major global medal after state independence.

The 2025 World Championship showed a different side of the current cycle. Serbia won Pool H with a 2-1 record, finishing ahead of Czechia, Brazil and China on the pool table. Its tournament ended in the knockout phase, however, and the official final standings placed Serbia 10th.

That finish became the starting point for a broader rebuild in 2026. The next global championship will also carry a new name. FIVB has renamed the men’s World Championship as the FIVB Volleyball World Cup beginning in 2027. The tournament will be held in Poland from September 10 to 26 and will contain 32 teams.

Serbia has officially qualified. OSSRB confirmed on September 29 that Serbia was among the teams taking the remaining World Cup places through the FIVB World Ranking. The qualification matters beyond participation itself because the 2027 competition will award three Olympic places to the highest-finishing teams that have not already qualified for Los Angeles.

Global Competition

Best / Recent Result

FIVB World Championship

Silver — 1998, predecessor Yugoslav team

FIVB World Championship — Serbia

Bronze — 2010

2025 FIVB World Championship

10th

FIVB World League

Champion — 2016

Volleyball Nations League

5th — 2018

2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup

Qualified

Serbia in the Volleyball Nations League

Serbia entered the VNL in 2018 only two years after winning the final edition of the World League in which it had claimed its first title. The transition between competitions has not produced another medal. Serbia’s best VNL finish remains fifth in the inaugural 2018 edition.

The later Paris cycle became increasingly difficult. Serbia finished 10th in the 2024 VNL and 16th in 2025. The 2026 season therefore represented an improvement in results even while the roster was being rebuilt.

Crețu used the 2026 VNL to expose younger players to senior international volleyball. One of the clearest examples was Vuk Kulpinac, who entered the senior setup at only 18 and earned starting opportunities during the tournament. FIVB’s feature on Kulpinac described how quickly he had to adapt to the senior national-team environment and the responsibility given to him by the coaching staff.

Serbia finished the 2026 preliminary phase 11th with five wins, seven losses and 16 points, recording 19 sets won and 25 lost. That was not enough to reach the Finals, but it represented a meaningful improvement from the previous year’s 16th-place finish.

VNL Season

Result

2018

5th — best VNL finish

2024

10th

2025

16th

2026

11th in preliminary phase; did not qualify for Finals

The significance of the 2026 VNL lies less in the final position than in how responsibility began to move toward the next generation. Established players remained important, but Serbia was no longer building every match around the same veteran core that had defined much of the previous decade.

EuroVolley & Continental Record

Serbia’s European Championship record is one of the strongest in CEV men’s history. CEV’s historical treatment combines the Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro and Serbia periods, giving the lineage 12 EuroVolley medals after the 2019 championship. The three gold medals came in 2001, 2011 and 2019.

The 2019 title remains the last senior men’s medal. Serbia defeated Slovenia 3-1 in Paris after dropping the opening set, with Uroš Kovačević playing a major attacking role and later receiving the MVP award. The final also highlighted the balance of that generation: Aleksandar Atanasijević, Marko Podraščanin, Srećko Lisinac, Nikola Jovović and other established players contributed around Kovačević.

EuroVolley 2026

The 2026 edition arrived with lower continuity. Serbia traveled to Tampere with Jovović and Ivović among the most experienced players and several younger athletes playing their first major European Championship.

Serbia opened by defeating Estonia 3-1, then lost 0-3 to Finland. It recovered from a two-set deficit to beat the Netherlands 3-2 and also defeated Denmark before a 0-3 loss to Belgium closed the pool phase. Three victories were enough for third place in Pool C and a place in the round of 16.

Slovenia then ended Serbia’s tournament emphatically in Turin. Serbia lost 14-25, 13-25, 22-25 in 77 minutes. OSSRB described the opening two sets as among Serbia’s weakest elimination-round performances in recent years. At EuroVolley, only 14 players were selected. Earlier VNL weeks used different combinations, and younger players such as Kulpinac, Brborić and Marinović received roles that changed over the course of the summer.

Club cells marked with an em dash do not indicate that the player is unattached. They indicate that a sufficiently current 2026/27 affiliation was not strong enough to state without qualification. Several players changed clubs after the federation published its initial registration, so carrying an older affiliation forward merely to fill the table would create false currentness.

Coaching Staff

Serbia’s EuroVolley preparation and competition sources identify Gheorghe Crețu as head coach and show a staff combining coaching, analysis, conditioning and medical support.

Role

Name

Organization / Club

Head Coach

Gheorghe Crețu

Serbia Men’s National Team

Assistant Coach

Francesco Garrera

Serbia Men’s National Team

Assistant Coach / Analysis Staff

Đorđe Pejić

Serbia Men’s National Team

Statistics / Analysis

Kasper Jakub Nalepka

Serbia Men’s National Team

Statistics / Analysis

Mihau Mateuš Mjenkus

Serbia Men’s National Team

Strength & Conditioning Coach

Matijas Rebeles Kioći

Serbia Men’s National Team

Physiotherapist

Ivan Ružić

Serbia Men’s National Team

Physiotherapist

Danijel Petrović

Serbia Men’s National Team

Team Manager

Edin Škorić

Serbia Men’s National Team

OSSRB’s August preparation update lists Pejić, Nalepka and Mjenkus within the statistics/analysis group, while the CEV event registration also assigns Pejić an assistant-coach role. The combined label above preserves both scopes without treating one event’s administrative designation as a contradiction in the coaching structure.

Crețu’s current assignment has become closely tied to the youth transition. Jovović’s CEV interview before EuroVolley described the coach as highly invested in giving younger players time and responsibility, while the 2026 VNL showed that approach through the introduction of teenagers and first-time senior internationals.

Playing Identity & Team Style

The current Serbia team is less tactically settled than the title-winning groups of 2016 or 2019. That is partly structural: a large number of younger players entered senior competition in 2026, while Jovović, Ivović and Luburić were among the limited group carrying extensive major-tournament experience into EuroVolley.

At setter, Jovović still provides the clearest organizing reference. His experience allows Serbia to play through the middles when reception is stable and to manage higher balls through Luburić or the outside hitters when first contact breaks down. Aleksa Batak provides an alternative distribution profile, while Vuk Todorović and several younger setters remain in the broader annual pool.

Serbia’s physical middle-blocker depth remains substantial. Nedeljković and Nemanja Mašulović stand at 205 cm, Kokeza at approximately the same height, and the broader pool includes several other middles around or above two metres. That gives Serbia the potential to pressure the net both through first-tempo attack and blocking, but the effectiveness of that advantage depends on receiving well enough to keep the setter close to the net.

The 2026 EuroVolley preparation made Serbia’s priorities unusually explicit. Jovović explained that the team was working particularly on reception, high-ball situations and serving before the tournament. Those three areas also describe the tension in the current system: Serbia wants to generate pressure from serve and retain its traditional physical threat at the net, but the younger wing group still has to provide enough reception stability to keep the full attack available.

The round-of-16 defeat to Slovenia illustrated what happens when that balance disappears. Serbia scored only 14 and 13 points in the first two sets and never established a stable enough side-out rhythm to bring its size and middle options consistently into the match. The performance should not define the entire current generation, but it is a useful marker of how far the rebuilding team still has to go against experienced European opposition.

The opposite position is another point of transition. Luburić remains the established senior option, while Veljko Mašulović was selected as an opposite for EuroVolley and received a larger role during the season. On the wings, Kujundžić and Perić remain established international options while Marinović, Kulpinac, Brborić and others represent the next layer.

The resulting identity is still developing. Serbia retains the personnel to build around serve pressure, height and high-level attacking at the net, but its next successful version will depend on how quickly the younger reception and setting groups become consistent enough to support those strengths.

Major Honors

Competition

Best / Major Results

Olympic Games

Gold — 2000; Bronze — 1996, predecessor Yugoslav team lineage

FIVB World Championship

Silver — 1998, predecessor Yugoslav team

FIVB World Championship — Serbia

Bronze — 2010

FIVB World League

Champion — 2016

CEV European Championship

Champion — 2001, 2011, 2019 across recognized lineage

CEV European Championship

Silver — 1997; multiple bronze medals across predecessor and Serbia eras

FIVB World Grand Champions Cup

Bronze — 2001

The historical labels matter. Ivan Miljković then became one of the leading attacking figures of the next era, while players such as Podraščanin, Atanasijević, Kovačević and Lisinac carried Serbia through the World League and later European title cycles.

Kovačević’s 2019 tournament remains the clearest individual marker from Serbia’s most recent championship team. He was named EuroVolley MVP after Serbia completed the tournament unbeaten and defeated Slovenia in the final.

Jovović now occupies a different role. He was already part of the 2019 championship team, but in 2026 his importance extends beyond setting. As captain, he is one of the few remaining senior players with direct experience of Serbia’s latest medal era and has publicly described his responsibility to help younger players adapt to the national team.

Rivalries & Key Matchups

Serbia vs Slovenia

Slovenia has become one of the most meaningful European matchups in Serbia’s recent history. Serbia defeated Slovenia 3-1 in the 2019 EuroVolley final to win its third continental title. Seven years later, the same opponent ended Serbia’s 2026 EuroVolley campaign with a 3-0 round-of-16 victory.

The contrast between those two matches captures Serbia’s broader transition. The 2019 lineup was built around an experienced, settled championship core. The 2026 group contained far more new senior players and did not have the same stability under pressure.

Serbia vs Italy

Italy has repeatedly intersected with Serbia at important moments. A heavy defeat to Italy in Olympic qualification preceded Serbia’s 2019 coaching change and subsequent EuroVolley title. More broadly, Italy remains one of the European standards against which Serbia’s ability to rebuild into a medal contender can be measured.

Serbia vs Poland

Poland is another major reference point in the current cycle. The Polish men’s team sits at the top of the FIVB ranking, won EuroVolley 2026 and is coached by Serbian legend Nikola Grbić. Poland’s current success therefore creates an unusual overlap between Serbia’s own national-team history and one of its strongest contemporary European opponents.

Qualification Path & Tournament Cycle

Serbia’s 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup place is secured. OSSRB confirmed the final 32-team field on September 29 and listed Serbia among the countries qualifying through the FIVB World Ranking. The tournament will be played in Poland from September 10 to 26, 2027.

That qualification is particularly important because Serbia did not secure a direct Olympic place at EuroVolley 2026. Poland won the continental title and became Europe’s LA28 qualifier. Japan, Cuba, Tunisia and Brazil won the corresponding places in the other continental championships, while the United States already held the host berth.

Under the official LA28 system, three additional men’s Olympic places will go to the highest-finishing eligible teams at the 2027 global championship. The final three will then be awarded through the FIVB World Ranking after the preliminary phase of the 2028 VNL.

Target Event

Current Status

2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup

Qualified — ranking allocation

Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games

Not yet qualified

LA28 Route 1

Top three eligible non-qualified teams at 2027 World Cup

LA28 Route 2

Final FIVB ranking allocation after 2028 VNL preliminary phase

Serbia’s No. 18 ranking makes the 2027 tournament more than a normal championship appearance. It offers an opportunity to secure Olympic qualification directly rather than depending entirely on the final ranking pathway one year later.

Current Cycle & Team Status

The defining fact about Serbia’s current men’s team is not a single tournament finish but the distance between the program’s historical standard and the stage reached by the new generation in 2026.

The transition was visible throughout the season. VNL provided senior minutes to young players, EuroVolley placed greater responsibility on Marinović and other emerging attackers, and Jovović took over the captaincy while still functioning as the team’s main experienced setter. The broad 36-player pool gives Crețu and any future coaching staff a large base from which to select, but a wide pool does not automatically provide an established major-championship lineup.

Results remain inconsistent. Serbia improved from its difficult 2025 VNL campaign to finish 11th in the 2026 preliminary phase, but EuroVolley ended in the round of 16 and the ranking slipped to No. 18. A team that entered the decade accustomed to discussing semifinals and medals is currently rebuilding the foundations required to reach those rounds again.

The positive side of the cycle is that qualification pressure for the next global championship has already been removed. Serbia will be in Poland for the 2027 World Cup. That tournament will provide both a measure of how far the younger generation has progressed and one of the two remaining pathways to Los Angeles.

Recent Performance Snapshot

Competition

Result

Context

2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup qualification

Qualified

Secured through FIVB ranking allocation

2026 EuroVolley

13th

Three pool wins; eliminated 0-3 by Slovenia in round of 16

2026 Volleyball Nations League

11th in preliminary phase

5-7 record, 16 points; missed Finals

2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship

10th

Won Pool H before knockout elimination

Paris 2024 Olympic Games

9th

One win, two losses in Pool A

2024 Volleyball Nations League

10th

Missed Finals

EuroVolley 2019

Gold

Beat Slovenia 3-1 in final; Uroš Kovačević named MVP

FIVB World League 2016

Gold

Serbia’s first World League title

The table shows why Serbia’s 2027 season carries unusual importance. The national team has not won a senior men’s medal since EuroVolley 2019, yet it remains close enough to the upper international tier to enter another global championship with an Olympic berth available. The rebuilding project now has a defined competitive deadline.

FAQ

Who is the head coach of the Serbia men’s national volleyball team?

Gheorghe Crețu is the current head coach. OSSRB listed him as Serbia’s first coach when announcing the EuroVolley 2026 squad, and no official federation announcement replacing him had been published at the final research pass.

Who is the captain of Serbia’s men’s national volleyball team?

Nikola Jovović is the current captain. CEV reported that he was appointed at the beginning of the 2026 season as Serbia moved into a younger national-team cycle.

What is Serbia’s current FIVB World Ranking?

Serbia is No. 18 in the October 1, 2026 snapshot, with 224.83 ranking points. Because FIVB rankings are dynamic, the official Volleyball World ranking page should be rechecked whenever the profile receives a material update.

Has Serbia qualified for the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup?

Yes. Serbia qualified through the FIVB World Ranking allocation and is included in the confirmed 32-team field for the tournament in Poland.

Has Serbia qualified for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics?

No. Serbia did not win the 2026 European Championship, so it did not take Europe’s direct continental quota. It can still qualify through the 2027 global championship or the final FIVB ranking pathway after the 2028 VNL preliminary phase.

What is Serbia’s best Olympic result?

The recognized predecessor Yugoslav team won Olympic gold at Sydney 2000 and bronze at Atlanta 1996. The independent Serbian team should be distinguished from those predecessor results when historical records are presented.

Has Serbia won the men’s World Championship?

The predecessor Yugoslav team finished second at the 1998 World Championship. Independent Serbia’s best World Championship finish is the bronze medal won in 2010.

Has Serbia won the Volleyball Nations League?

No. Serbia’s best VNL finish is fifth place in 2018. It did, however, win the predecessor annual competition, the FIVB World League, in 2016.

How many EuroVolley titles does Serbia have?

The recognized national-team lineage has three men’s European titles: 2001 as Yugoslavia, 2011 as Serbia and 2019 as Serbia. The 2019 championship was the lineage’s 12th EuroVolley medal overall.

Why does Serbia’s current pool contain 36 players?

OSSRB announced a broad 36-player senior list for the 2026 VNL and EuroVolley season. Individual competitions use much smaller squads — EuroVolley, for example, used a 14-player roster. The annual pool and an event roster therefore represent different selection scopes.

References

<ul
