The program’s strongest historical markers span several eras: fourth place at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, seventh at the 2014 World Championship, a first NORCECA title in 2015, fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympics and bronze in the final edition of the FIVB World League in 2017. More recently, Canada qualified for three consecutive Olympic Games from 2016 through 2024 and reached the VNL Finals in 2024, reinforcing its position as a team capable of operating inside the upper international tier even when podium finishes have remained elusive.

The current era is led by head coach Dan Lewis, a former Canadian national-team libero who moved into the senior role in 2025 after serving as a national-team assistant and Next Gen coach. Canada’s 2026 player structure combines internationally established athletes such as Stephen Maar, Eric Loeppky, Arthur Szwarc, Sharone Vernon-Evans and Danny Demyanenko with a larger group moving through university volleyball, first professional contracts and expanded senior roles. Loeppky emerged as the documented captain during the 2026 NORCECA Championship. Canada is No. 16 in the current FIVB Men’s World Ranking, has qualified for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup, but remains unqualified for Los Angeles 2028 after Cuba took NORCECA’s direct Olympic berth.

Team Information

Field

Detail

Official Team Name

Canada Men’s National Volleyball Team

Common Name

Team Canada

Country

Canada

Gender

Men

National Federation

Volleyball Canada

FIVB Code

CAN

Region / Confederation

North America — NORCECA

Head Coach

Dan Lewis

Captain

Eric Loeppky

FIVB World Ranking

No. 16 — snapshot checked October 6, 2026 — View full FIVB rankings

Current National-Team Cycle

2026–28 / Los Angeles 2028 cycle

Los Angeles 2028 Status

Not yet qualified

2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup

Qualified — 2026 NORCECA silver medalist

Olympic Best Result

4th — Los Angeles 1984

World Championship Best Result

7th — 2014

Volleyball Nations League Best Result

6th — 2024

FIVB World League Best Result

Bronze — 2017

NORCECA Championship Best Result

Champions — 2015

Pan American Games Best Result

Bronze — 1979, 1999, 2015

Federation Website

Volleyball Canada

Federation X

Volleyball Canada — @VBallCanada

Federation Instagram

@VolleyballCanada

Lewis succeeded Tuomas Sammelvuo after the Paris 2024 cycle. His appointment also represented continuity inside the Canadian system: Lewis had played libero for Canada through 2016, assisted the senior program including at the Tokyo Olympics and later coached the Next Gen group. Volleyball Canada described his mandate in the context of building on the work of Sammelvuo and former long-term coach Glenn Hoag while moving toward LA28.

The captaincy has also moved with the current cycle. Nick Hoag captained Canada at Paris 2024 and remained captain at the 2025 World Championship, but Volleyball Canada explicitly identified Eric Loeppky as Team Canada’s captain during the 2026 NORCECA Championship. The current profile therefore uses Loeppky rather than carrying an earlier captaincy forward automatically.

Team History & Development

Canada’s first Olympic appearance came as host at Montreal 1976. The team did not progress into medal contention, but the period that followed became important for the development of the men’s program. Japanese coach Ken Maeda was recruited to help establish a stronger national-team structure, and a relatively stable player group was developed through the late 1970s and early 1980s.

That project reached its peak at Los Angeles 1984. Canada went 3–1 in preliminary play, advanced to the semifinals and ultimately finished fourth after losing the bronze-medal match to Italy. It remains the best Olympic finish in Canadian men’s volleyball history. The group included players such as Glenn Hoag, Don Saxton, Terry Danyluk, John Barrett and Alex Ketrzynski and later entered the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame as a team.

The following decades were less linear. Canada continued appearing in World Championships, NORCECA competition and the FIVB World League, but Olympic qualification remained difficult. The program missed several Games before a modern resurgence developed under Glenn Hoag, who had himself been part of the 1984 team.

Hoag became senior national-team head coach in 2006 and oversaw a long rebuilding process. Canada reached fifth place in the 2013 World League and then produced its best World Championship result in 2014, finishing seventh in Poland. A year later, Canada won the 2015 NORCECA Championship, still the program’s only senior continental championship, and earned Pan American Games bronze in Toronto.

The next breakthrough was Olympic qualification. Canada returned to the Games at Rio 2016 and finished fifth, its best Olympic performance since 1984. Players including Gavin Schmitt, Gord Perrin, Graham Vigrass, Nicholas Hoag and others formed the core of a generation that established Canada more consistently among the world’s competitive teams. Schmitt had also been the leading Canadian scorer during the record-setting seventh-place World Championship run in 2014.

In 2017, Canada took another important step by winning bronze in the FIVB World League. It was the program’s best result in the competition and came in the final World League season before the VNL replaced it. Volleyball Canada’s annual report described the bronze-medal victory over the United States in Curitiba as Canada’s best-ever World League finish.

Canada remained an Olympic program through the next two cycles. It competed at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021, and then qualified for Paris 2024 through the Olympic Qualification Tournament in China. Paris produced a more difficult result: Canada lost all three pool matches and finished 10th overall, ending Sammelvuo’s two-year senior-team cycle.

Dan Lewis took over in 2025 with a roster that already reflected substantial turnover. Volleyball Canada described that season as one with a relatively small group of returning Olympians and more players receiving international opportunities. By 2026, the expansion was even more visible in the 30-player VNL registration, which included established professionals, recent Next Gen players and athletes still competing at university level.

Canada at the Olympic Games

Canada’s Olympic history is defined less by medals than by repeated periods of reaching the sport’s most difficult qualification stage.

The men first appeared at Montreal 1976 as host. Their best performance came eight years later in Los Angeles, when the Maeda-led team reached the semifinals and finished fourth. Canada lost only once in the preliminary phase, then faced the United States in the semifinal before falling to Italy in the bronze-medal match.

Canada returned to the Olympics in 1992 but then endured a 24-year absence. The breakthrough under Glenn Hoag came through the 2016 qualification tournament in Japan. Canada subsequently finished fifth at Rio 2016, reaching the quarterfinals and confirming the progress the program had already shown at the 2014 World Championship and in the World League.

Tokyo marked a second consecutive Olympic appearance, and qualification for Paris 2024 extended that streak to three Games. Canada entered Paris ranked ninth in the world but was eliminated in pool play and finished 10th overall.

The route to Los Angeles 2028 remains open. Canada reached NORCECA’s dedicated Olympic qualification final in September 2026 but lost to Cuba 3–1. Cuba therefore claimed the confederation’s direct LA28 berth. Canada must now qualify through the 2027 global championship or the final FIVB World Ranking route in 2028.

World Championship & Other Global Competitions

Canada’s best result at the senior men’s World Championship is seventh place in 2014. That performance was a major marker in the Hoag-era rise and exceeded every previous Canadian finish at the event.

The expanded 2025 World Championship became the first global championship under Dan Lewis. Canada defeated Libya and Japan before losing to Türkiye, finishing second in Pool G and advancing to the round of 16. Poland ended Canada’s tournament with a 3–1 victory. Lewis nevertheless emphasized the value of combining older and younger athletes against the world’s top-ranked team.

Canada is already qualified for the next edition. Its semifinal victory over Cuba at the 2026 NORCECA Championship guaranteed one of the confederation’s three places at the 2027 global tournament in Poland.

The competition will also carry a new name. Beginning in 2027, the FIVB Volleyball World Championship becomes the FIVB Volleyball World Cup. This is a renaming of the flagship World Championship rather than a continuation of the former separate World Cup competition. The 2027 men’s edition in Poland will also award LA28 places to the three highest-finishing eligible teams not already qualified.

For Canada, that makes 2027 more than another World Championship appearance. It is the program’s next opportunity to turn its growing international depth into Olympic qualification before the final ranking route becomes decisive in 2028.

Canada in the Volleyball Nations League

Canada has been part of the VNL since the competition’s early years and produced its best result in 2024, when it finished fifth in the preliminary phase, reached the Finals and ended the tournament sixth overall. That performance came immediately before Paris 2024 and demonstrated the ceiling of a group containing Maar, Loeppky, Hoag, Szwarc, Ketrzynski and other experienced international players.

The 2026 VNL unfolded very differently.

Canada opened the competition at home in Ottawa and produced its lone victory against back-to-back Olympic champion France, winning 3–1. The season then became defined by extremely narrow losses: Canada went to five sets eight times across the competition and lost seven consecutive tie-break matches during one stretch.

Despite often remaining within a few points of opponents, the standings were unforgiving. Canada completed the preliminary phase 17th with a 1–11 record and 10 standings points. Because Finals host China occupied a Final Phase place, Canada appears 18th in the official final standings.

The most consequential result came against Cuba during the final competition week. Canada entered the match needing a victory to preserve its VNL position but lost 3–0. Volleyball Canada noted that the defeat left the team unable to remain ahead of Cuba in the relegation race, removing Canada from the 2027 VNL.

The record alone does not fully describe the season. Canada remained competitive enough to take the United States, Türkiye, Argentina and Japan to five sets, while Jackson Howe emerged as one of the tournament’s leading blockers before signing with Cucine Lube Civitanova. The larger problem was closing those matches: seven tie-break losses converted prolonged competitive performances into very few standings points.

That relegation changes the preparation landscape before LA28. Canada will not have the normal 2027 VNL schedule available and will need other high-level international competition around its World Cup preparation.

NORCECA Championship Record

Canada has one of the deeper medal histories in the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship without matching the title totals of Cuba or the United States.

Before the 2026 edition, Canada had accumulated one gold medal, seven silver medals and 13 bronze medals. Its lone championship came in 2015.

The 2026 NORCECA Championship in Moncton served two purposes. Three World Cup places were available, while eligible teams also competed for advancement into a separate final stage for NORCECA’s single direct LA28 berth.

Canada won its opening pool and then defeated Cuba 3–0 in the semifinal, securing qualification for the 2027 World Cup. The U.S. awaited in the final.

The championship match went five sets. The United States won the opening two before Canada responded to force a decider, but the Americans ultimately took the fifth set and the title. Canada finished with silver — its eighth runner-up result at the continental championship.

2026 NORCECA Championship Roster — Event-Specific

This 14-player group was Canada’s competition-specific NORCECA Championship roster. It also contained Fynn McCarthy, who was not part of the final 30-player VNL registration, another reason not to treat any one event roster as a permanent definition of the national team.

Loeppky captained this group and was repeatedly identified as Team Canada’s captain in Volleyball Canada’s tournament coverage.

2026 Current National Team Pool

The broadest official 2026 senior selection was Canada’s 30-player VNL registration. Volleyball World confirmed that every participating nation submitted a final 30-player list, from which each competition week’s 12–14 active players and reserves were selected. Canada’s list therefore provides a more appropriate canonical current-pool scope than any one VNL week or the later NORCECA roster.

The Club / Current Program column below reflects 2026/27 affiliations where they can be supported publicly. Canada is not relying on one fixed group of Olympic veterans. The pool contains established professionals such as Maar, Loeppky, Vernon-Evans, Szwarc and Demyanenko; players who have already moved into significant national-team roles such as Ketrzynski, Young, Howe, Gyimah and Elgert; and younger players developing through university or first professional opportunities.

Several 2026/27 moves reinforce that spread. Loeppky remains with Cucine Lube Civitanova and is joined there by Howe. Young and Gyimah are with BOGDANKA LUK Lublin. Maar remains at Galatasaray, Szwarc stays with Olsztyn, Canham extended with Düren, Schoenherr moved from Trinity Western to Lüneburg and Varga began his professional career with Toray Arrows Shizuoka.

The libero pool also extends well beyond one tournament pairing. Currie and Hollands handled the position at NORCECA, while Greenidge and Picklyk were both part of the 30-player VNL registration. Picklyk renewed with Lycurgus Groningen after being recognized among the leading liberos in the Dutch league.

Competition selections can therefore vary significantly without changing the scope of the canonical pool.

Coaching Staff

Canada’s staff changes somewhat by competition, but the first VNL week provides a useful broad senior-program staff structure for the 2026 season.

Role

Name

Organization / Club

Head Coach

Dan Lewis

Volleyball Canada

Assistant Coach

Juan Manuel Mendez

Volleyball Canada

Assistant Coach

Chris Voth

Volleyball Canada

Performance Analyst

Damian Musiak

Volleyball Canada

Sport Physiotherapist

Meredith Waisman

Volleyball Canada

Chiropractor

Nicholas Poelman

Volleyball Canada

Mental Performance Coach

Kyle Paquette

Volleyball Canada

Mental Health Lead

Donna McDonagh

Volleyball Canada

Sport Dietitian

Emilie Rousseau Comtois

Volleyball Canada

Team Manager

Cassandra Nicol

Volleyball Canada

High Performance Director

Julien Boucher

Volleyball Canada

The NORCECA traveling staff was narrower and included Chris Voth as assistant coach, Meredith Waisman, Nicholas Poelman, strength and conditioning trainer Raphael Poulin, mental performance coach Kyle Paquette, statistician Lionel Bonnaure, IST director Michael Cook, high-performance director Julien Boucher and team manager Cassandra Nicol. That event staff belongs to the tournament context rather than replacing the broader season structure.

Lewis brings an unusually direct link between Canada’s playing and coaching eras. He played libero for the national team until 2016, served as an assistant through later cycles, including Tokyo, and coached Canada’s Next Gen group before taking over the senior team. His club work with Alterna Stade Poitevin also keeps him involved in European professional volleyball during the national-team offseason.

Playing Identity & Team Style

Canada’s current tactical identity is shaped first by physical size and front-court depth, but the 2026 season showed that those advantages do not automatically translate into match control.

The middle-blocker group is particularly deep. Demyanenko and Gyimah bring significant international experience, while Howe developed into one of the standout blockers of the 2026 VNL. Eshenko, Schoenherr, Hudson, Duncanson and Cherewaty create further options across the broad pool. Howe’s blocking performance was strong enough that Lube highlighted his 33 winning blocks through the first two VNL weeks when announcing his move to Italy.

Canada also has unusual flexibility at opposite. Ketrzynski’s 208-centimetre frame gives the team a high contact point and he carried a substantial scoring load through the 2026 VNL. Vernon-Evans and Szwarc are established international opposites, while Canham, Weekes and Hershtynovich broaden the player-type options available to Lewis.

The outside-hitter group mixes experience and transition. Maar remains one of Canada’s most complete high-level wing players, while Loeppky’s combination of attack, serve and reception has made him increasingly central to both club and national-team structures. Young, Hofer, Varga, Siksna and Schmidt offer different levels of reception stability, physical attacking and developmental upside.

One of Canada’s most important tactical issues in 2026 was not whether it could compete point-for-point with strong teams but whether it could finish close matches. The VNL provided the clearest evidence. Canada pushed seven matches into losing fifth sets during one stretch, including matches against the United States, Türkiye, Argentina and Japan. Against the U.S. in Ottawa, Canada led two sets to none before losing 3–2. Against Japan, it again won the opening two sets before the match turned.

That pattern suggests a team whose block, physical attacking and serving can create high-level stretches but whose side-out stability and late-set execution still need to become more repeatable. It also explains why a 1–11 VNL record can coexist with numerous competitive matches.

The later NORCECA run showed a more controlled version of the same team. Canada swept Cuba in the semifinal and pushed the United States to five sets in the final before losing. The Olympic qualifier against Cuba, however, again exposed the narrow margin between competing well and securing the result Canada needed most.

Major Honors

Competition

Best / Major Results

Olympic Games

4th: 1984

FIVB Men’s World Championship

7th: 2014

Volleyball Nations League

6th: 2024

FIVB World League

Bronze: 2017

NORCECA Championship

Gold: 2015; Silver: multiple editions including 2023 and 2026

Pan American Games

Bronze: 1979, 1999, 2015

Canada’s international history is notable because its strongest achievements come from several distinct generations rather than one extended championship era. The 1984 team established the Olympic benchmark; the Hoag-coached generation produced the 2014 World Championship breakthrough, 2015 continental title, Rio 2016 quarterfinal and 2017 World League bronze; the more recent group then maintained three consecutive Olympic appearances and reached the 2024 VNL Finals.

The NORCECA record is the clearest medal-heavy part of Canada’s history. The program has repeatedly finished on the continental podium, although the 2015 championship remains its only gold.

Notable Players Across Generations

Player

Position

Era / Years

Note

Glenn Hoag

Outside Hitter

1980s

Member of the 1984 Olympic fourth-place team; later became the long-term head coach behind Canada’s modern rise.

Don Saxton

Attacker

1970s–1980s

Major figure in the generation that reached fourth at Los Angeles 1984.

Paul Duerden

Attacker

1990s–2000s

Long-serving national-team scorer with an extensive elite European club career.

Frederic Winters

Outside Hitter

2000s–2010s

Long-term wing player during the build-up toward Canada’s modern top-level cycle.

Gavin Schmitt

Opposite

2000s–2010s

Leading scorer of the 2014 World Championship breakthrough and key figure in qualification for Rio 2016.

Graham Vigrass

Middle Blocker

2010s–2020s

Member of the 2014 seventh-place World Championship team, 2016 Olympic team and 2017 World League bronze-medal group.

Nicholas Hoag

Outside Hitter

2010s–2020s

Three-time Olympian and captain at Paris 2024 and the 2025 World Championship.

Stephen Maar

Outside Hitter

2010s–present

Experienced current-cycle wing player with a long professional career in major European leagues.

Arthur Szwarc

Opposite

2010s–present

Long-serving opposite and member of Canada’s recent Olympic and VNL cycles.

Eric Loeppky

Outside Hitter

2020s–present

Current captain and one of the main attacking/reception players of the LA28 cycle.

Hoag’s importance crosses the player-coach divide. He was an outside hitter on the 1984 Olympic team and later became the coach most closely associated with Canada’s modern rise. Under his leadership, Canada produced its best World Championship result, returned to the Olympics and established a deeper professional player base.

Schmitt became one of the major attacking references of that era. He led Canada in scoring in six of seven matches during the 2014 World Championship and later returned from serious injury to help secure the Rio Olympic berth.

The current group does not yet have one equivalent defining figure. Loeppky’s captaincy, Maar’s experience and the continued roles of Szwarc, Vernon-Evans and Demyanenko coexist with younger players receiving meaningful responsibility. That distribution is central to Lewis’s current cycle.

Rivalries & Key Matchups

United States is Canada’s most natural high-level regional comparison. The two programs meet across NORCECA, VNL and Olympic qualification contexts, but the U.S. has historically accumulated considerably more major international titles.

Their 2026 meetings illustrated the competitive gap and its limits. Canada took a two-set lead against the U.S. in the VNL before losing in five, then reached another five-set match in the NORCECA final. The U.S. again prevailed, but Canada demonstrated that the matchup can become highly competitive even when the broader international records of the two programs remain very different.

Cuba has an even deeper continental importance. Cuba owns the largest title total in NORCECA history and has repeatedly shared qualification pathways with Canada. In September 2026, Canada swept Cuba in the continental semifinal to qualify for the 2027 World Cup, only for Cuba to reverse the outcome four days later in the match that mattered for the Olympic berth.

Those two results summarize why competition scope matters so much in national-team volleyball. Canada’s 3–0 win established superiority on one night and secured the World Cup objective; it did not guarantee the same result when the teams met again under different qualification pressure.

European teams such as France, Poland and Italy provide a different benchmark. Canada’s 2026 VNL win over Olympic champion France showed its capacity to produce elite-level individual matches, while Poland ended Canada’s 2025 World Championship run and has remained a reference point for the level required in global knockout volleyball.

Qualification Path & Tournament Cycle

Canada has completed one major qualification task but not the other.

The team is qualified for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup. Reaching the NORCECA Championship final secured one of the region’s three berths before Canada ultimately took silver.

Canada is not qualified for Los Angeles 2028.

Under the current Olympic system, the United States receives the host berth. Each continental confederation then awards one place through its 2026 championship/qualification process. NORCECA’s final berth was decided in Moncton, where Cuba defeated Canada 3–1.

The next opportunity is the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup in Poland. The renamed global championship will award Olympic places to the three highest-finishing teams not already qualified. Because Canada has already secured entry into that tournament, it controls a direct opportunity to reach LA28 through its World Cup result.

If Canada does not qualify there, the final route is the FIVB World Ranking after the preliminary phase of the 2028 VNL, with the remaining eligible Olympic places awarded by ranking.

Canada’s current ranking therefore matters, but No. 16 does not itself constitute Olympic qualification. The relevant ranking position in 2028 will depend both on Canada’s future results and on which higher-ranked teams have already secured Olympic places through other pathways.

The loss of a 2027 VNL place complicates this process because Canada will not have the same annual schedule of ranking-bearing matches against the VNL field. Building an alternative competition program around the World Cup cycle becomes an important practical issue for the federation.

Canada in 2026

As of October 6, 2026, Canada is No. 16 in the FIVB Men’s World Ranking, qualified for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup, and still seeking a place at Los Angeles 2028. The current ranking snapshot lists Canada on 209.21 ranking points. The official Volleyball World ranking page remains the live authoritative destination.

The season produced sharply different outcomes across competitions. Canada’s VNL campaign ended at 1–11 and cost it its place in the 2027 competition, despite an unusual number of five-set matches. The team recovered later in the summer, earned silver at the NORCECA Championship and secured World Cup qualification, but then lost the decisive Olympic qualifier to Cuba.

The roster picture is more encouraging than the VNL record alone suggests. Loeppky and Howe will play together at Lube; Young and Gyimah form another Canadian pairing at Lublin; Varga has moved from Long Beach State to Toray Arrows Shizuoka; Schoenherr has started his professional career in Lüneburg; and several other pool players remain active across Poland, France, Germany, Türkiye, Korea, Japan and the NCAA/U SPORTS system.

The challenge for Lewis is no longer simply to identify enough international-level players. Canada has a broad pool. The more difficult task is converting that depth into reliable combinations capable of closing matches against teams in and around the Olympic qualification zone.

The 2027 World Cup will provide the clearest test of whether that development has translated into another Olympic-calibre Canadian team.

Recent Performance Snapshot

Date / Competition

Result

Context

September 19, 2026 — NORCECA Olympic Qualifier Final

Canada 1–3 Cuba

Cuba secured NORCECA’s direct LA28 berth; Canada remains unqualified.

September 16, 2026 — NORCECA Championship Final

Canada 2–3 United States

Canada earned continental silver.

September 15, 2026 — NORCECA Semifinal

Canada 3–0 Cuba

Canada reached the final and secured qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

June–July 2026 — Volleyball Nations League

1–11; 17th preliminary / 18th final standings

Canada was relegated from the 2027 VNL.

September 20, 2025 — World Championship Round of 16

Canada 1–3 Poland

Canada’s first global championship under Dan Lewis ended in the knockout round.

August 2024 — Paris Olympic Games

10th

Canada’s third consecutive Olympic appearance.

June 2024 — Volleyball Nations League

6th overall

Canada’s best VNL finish to date.

The 2026 season therefore cannot be summarized cleanly as either progress or decline. Canada lost VNL status and missed the direct Olympic berth, but it also qualified for the next global championship and gave a wider player group meaningful senior exposure. The World Cup cycle will determine which of those developments proves more important.

FAQ

Who is the head coach of Canada’s men’s national volleyball team?

Dan Lewis is the current head coach.
