The program later endured long gaps between major tournaments, but the past decade has produced a much more stable international presence. European League titles in 2017 and 2024, quarterfinal appearances at EuroVolley 2019 and 2023, seventh place at the 2022 World Championship and promotion into the Volleyball Nations League have steadily raised the competitive level of the team.

That progress continued under Raúl Lozano. Ukraine finished 10th in its debut VNL season in 2025, qualified for the VNL Finals for the first time in 2026 and ended that campaign seventh. Oleh Plotnytskyi’s return strengthened an already experienced core featuring Yurii Semeniuk, Vasyl Tupchii, Illia Kovalov and Dmytro Yanchuk, while 214 cm opposite Maksym Tonkonoh emerged as one of the most interesting younger players in the group. EuroVolley 2026 ended in the Round of 16 rather than another quarterfinal, but Ukraine closed the continental season at No. 12 in the world ranking and remains strongly positioned for the ranking allocation to the 2027 global championship.

Team Information

Field

Detail

Official Team Name

Ukraine Men’s National Volleyball Team

Native Name

Чоловіча збірна України з волейболу

Country

Ukraine

Gender

Men

National Federation

Ukrainian Volleyball Federation / Федерація волейболу України (FVU)

FIVB Code

UKR

Confederation

CEV — European Volleyball Confederation

Head Coach

Raúl Lozano

Captain

Oleh Plotnytskyi

FIVB World Ranking

No. 12 — 255.62 points (1 October 2026) — View full FIVB rankings

Current Cycle

2026–2028 / LA28 cycle

2027 World Cup Status

Not yet formally confirmed in the complete 32-team field; Ukraine is inside the ranking-allocation range at the October 2026 ranking snapshot

LA28 Olympic Status

Not yet qualified

Olympic Participation

No men’s Olympic appearance as independent Ukraine

World Championship Best Result

7th — 2022

VNL Best Result

7th — 2026; first VNL Finals appearance

EuroVolley Best Result

6th — 1993

European / Golden League

Champions — 2017, 2024

Federation Website

Ukrainian Volleyball Federation

Federation Telegram

Ukrainian Volleyball Federation — Official Telegram

Federation YouTube

UkrVolleyball — Federation YouTube channel

Lozano has coached Ukraine since 2024. His second VNL season brought the team its first appearance in the competition’s Final Eight, and CEV continued to list him as head coach at EuroVolley 2026 with Agustin Briscioli as assistant coach.

The captaincy requires a date-sensitive distinction. FIVB identified middle blocker Yurii Semeniuk as Ukraine’s captain before and during the early part of the 2026 VNL campaign. Plotnytskyi returned to international play during that season after a long absence, and by EuroVolley CEV was identifying him as captain. The current profile therefore uses Plotnytskyi as the latest verified captain while preserving Semeniuk’s VNL captaincy as competition-specific context.

The official Volleyball World ranking remains the authoritative live ranking source. The October 1 snapshot places Ukraine at No. 12 with 255.62 points, between Germany and Cuba. Rankings remain volatile and should be refreshed before any materially delayed publication.

Team History & Development

Ukraine joined CEV as an independent federation in 1992. Its first EuroVolley campaign followed almost immediately, and sixth place in 1993 remains the men’s team’s best European Championship finish. The early national team returned to EuroVolley in 1995 and 1997, placing ninth and seventh respectively, before a much longer period in which qualification for major tournaments became less consistent.

The first World Championship appearance came in 1998, when Ukraine finished 10th. A 24-year gap followed before the team returned to the World Championship in 2022. That return changed the international profile of the program. Ukraine advanced to the quarterfinals and ultimately finished seventh, its best World Championship result as an independent nation. Slovenia ended the run 3–1 in Ljubljana, but Ukraine had already moved further through the competition than at any previous world event.

Before that breakthrough, the European League had become an important platform for rebuilding competitive continuity. Ukraine captured its first European League title in 2017, defeating North Macedonia in the final. The competition gave a developing national-team generation repeated meaningful matches and eventually fed into improved EuroVolley results. Ukraine reached the European Championship quarterfinals in 2019, taking eventual champion Serbia to five sets in a match separated by only one total point, and reached the last eight again in 2023.

The team also finished third at the 2023 FIVB Challenger Cup after losing a five-set semifinal to Türkiye and then defeating Chile in the bronze-medal match. A year later, Ukraine won the CEV Golden European League for a second time. Those results helped maintain a ranking strong enough for another major step: when the VNL expanded, Ukraine entered the 2025 edition as the highest-ranked eligible team not already in the field.

Ukraine’s 2025 VNL debut immediately showed that promotion had not placed the team completely out of its depth. It recorded six wins, including victories over Japan and the United States, and took Italy and Brazil to five sets. Ukraine was ninth at the end of the preliminary table but 10th in the official final standings, an important distinction when comparing historical placements.

By 2026, the national team was no longer approaching the VNL simply as a newcomer. Seven wins from 12 preliminary matches delivered seventh place and qualification for the Final Eight on sporting results. That was the clearest confirmation yet that Ukraine had moved from occasional major-tournament breakthroughs toward a more regular presence around the edge of the international top eight.

Olympic History

Independent Ukraine has never qualified a men’s volleyball team for the Olympic Games. Olympedia’s record for Ukraine shows Olympic volleyball participation only by the women’s team in Atlanta 1996; no independent Ukrainian men’s team has appeared in the Olympic tournament. Ukrainian players had, of course, previously represented the Soviet Union, but those results belong to a different national-team lineage and should not be transferred to Ukraine’s independent record.

Los Angeles 2028 is therefore significant beyond the normal Olympic cycle. A qualification would be the first men’s Olympic appearance for independent Ukraine.

The 2026 European Championship offered the first route. Under the LA28 qualification system, each continental champion receives an Olympic quota. Poland won EuroVolley 2026 and therefore took Europe’s direct berth. Ukraine’s remaining opportunities are the 2027 global championship and, if necessary, the FIVB World Ranking after the 2028 VNL preliminary phase.

At the 2027 championship in Poland, the three highest-finishing teams not already qualified for Los Angeles will earn Olympic places. The final three men’s quotas will then go to the highest-ranked eligible teams after the preliminary phase of VNL 2028.

World Championship & Global Competition Record

Ukraine has appeared at three men’s World Championships as an independent nation: 1998, 2022 and 2025.

The defining result came in 2022. Ukraine advanced from the group stage, defeated the Netherlands in the Round of 16 and reached the quarterfinals. Slovenia won the last-eight meeting 3–1 — 18–25, 26–24, 25–19, 25–23 — leaving Ukraine seventh overall. That remains the best finish in the program’s World Championship history.

The 2025 championship in the Philippines produced a different outcome. Ukraine competed in Pool F and finished the preliminary phase with one victory and two defeats, placing third in the pool and 24th overall. The tournament interrupted the upward sequence created by 2022, but it did not erase the broader gains that were becoming visible in the VNL.

The 2027 edition in Poland will use a new competition name. FIVB has renamed the former Volleyball World Championship as the FIVB Volleyball World Cup beginning with the 2027 tournament. It remains the continuation of the World Championship lineage rather than a new historical competition.

For Ukraine, qualification now comes through the ranking allocation rather than EuroVolley. Italy qualified automatically as defending world champion and Poland as host, while the five continental championships supplied 15 more teams. Volleyball World confirmed on September 29 that 17 of 32 teams were known and the remaining 15 positions would be allocated through the FIVB World Ranking among teams not already qualified.

Ukraine’s No. 12 ranking leaves it comfortably inside that allocation picture because several teams ranked above Ukraine have already qualified through other routes. The complete men’s 32-team field, however, had not yet been formally announced at the time of this profile, so the reader-facing status remains ranking-secure in practical terms, awaiting formal confirmation, rather than officially qualified.

Ukraine in the Volleyball Nations League

Ukraine made its VNL debut in 2025 and finished 10th overall. The campaign was immediately competitive: the team beat Japan and the United States, split its 12 preliminary matches 6–6 and pushed both Italy and Brazil into fifth sets. FIVB subsequently described Ukraine’s debut as an impressive first season at the level.

The second season moved substantially further. Ukraine went 7–5 with 23 points, finishing seventh in the 2026 preliminary phase and securing a first Final Eight appearance. Unlike teams receiving an automatic host berth, Ukraine reached Ningbo through its position in the table.

One of the season’s most important matches came against Brazil. Ukraine handed the previously unbeaten Brazilians a 3–1 defeat during the preliminary phase. Plotnytskyi, appearing for Ukraine again after his long national-team absence, scored 19 points; Tupchii added 17, Illia Kovalov 14 and Semeniuk contributed four blocks among his 10 points. It showed how much more attacking depth Ukraine could field when its experienced wing players were available together.

The VNL also accelerated the emergence of Maksym Tonkonoh. The 214 cm opposite was still 18 during the competition and scored 21 points against Germany, giving Lozano a very different attacking profile alongside the more experienced Tupchii.

Poland awaited in the quarterfinal. Ukraine levelled the match by winning the second set but ultimately lost 3–1, 22–25, 25–22, 20–25, 17–25 from the Ukrainian perspective. The defeat left Ukraine seventh in the final standings, still its best VNL result and the first completed Finals campaign in team history.

The progression is unusually clear: 10th in the debut season, then seventh and a quarterfinal appearance one year later. Whether Ukraine can turn that trajectory into repeated top-eight finishes is one of the defining questions of the Lozano cycle.

EuroVolley Record

Ukraine’s best European Championship result remains sixth place in 1993, its first EuroVolley as an independent country. Later appearances in 1995, 1997 and 2005 did not improve on that mark.

The program returned to deeper continental runs in 2019. Ukraine reached the quarterfinals and nearly eliminated Serbia, losing an extraordinary five-set match 105–104 on total points. Serbia went on to win the championship. That performance became an important reference point for a generation that was beginning to re-establish Ukraine in the European knockout rounds.

Ukraine reached another EuroVolley quarterfinal in 2023. Plotnytskyi and Illia Kovalov were prominent on the wings during the tournament, while Semeniuk and the established middle-blocker group gave Ukraine a strong net presence. The last-eight finish reinforced the idea that 2019 had not been an isolated continental run.

EuroVolley 2026

The 2026 tournament began well. Ukraine beat Israel, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Portugal, losing only to Poland in Pool B. The 3–1 victory over co-host Bulgaria was particularly valuable because it came in Sofia in front of more than 11,000 spectators and temporarily lifted Ukraine into the world top ten during the tournament.

The Portugal match illustrated the quality of Ukraine’s best volleyball in the group stage. Ukraine won 3–0 and out-attacked Portugal 59% to 45%, held a large advantage in positive reception and won the ace count 8–2. Plotnytskyi scored 19 points and was identified by CEV as Ukraine’s captain; Yanchuk added 15.

Ukraine finished Pool B with four victories from five matches and advanced to the Round of 16. Romania ended the run in Sofia with a 3–0 victory, 25–22, 25–21, 30–28. Ukraine had opportunities to extend the match, particularly in the third set, but Romania closed the critical rallies more efficiently.

That Round-of-16 exit meant Ukraine did not claim one of Europe’s three continental berths for the 2027 World Cup. France, Finland and Slovenia qualified through EuroVolley because champion Poland was already guaranteed a place as the 2027 host. Poland also took Europe’s direct LA28 quota.

2026 Current National Team Pool

The federation’s principal 20-player preparation group for the 2026 VNL provides the cleanest broad senior-team pool for the season. It is wider than an individual competition roster and includes players who were later rotated in or out as injuries, club commitments and form affected selection. Event-specific VNL and EuroVolley lists should therefore remain separate from this canonical pool.

Club affiliations below reflect the latest verifiable 2026–27 destination where a later transfer or EuroVolley preparation source was available. Plotnytskyi returned after previously stepping away from the national team. Illia Kovalov later missed the EuroVolley preparation period because of health problems. His earlier national-team career includes major work with Poland, Germany and Iran, while his Ukraine tenure has so far included the 2025 VNL debut and the first VNL Finals appearance in 2026.

In June 2026, Lozano described the national-team project in terms of building a refreshed group rather than preserving a fixed lineup. Plotnytskyi’s return increased the experience level, while the staff continued to give significant international responsibility to younger players. That approach was visible throughout the VNL, where the lineup evolved from week to week rather than remaining locked to one 14-player selection.

Playing Identity & Team Style

Ukraine under Lozano has enough size to create pressure at the net without depending on one attacking route. Semeniuk stands 210 cm, Drozd 208 cm, Shchurov 208 cm and Tonkonoh 214 cm. Around that central height, Plotnytskyi and Yanchuk provide high-level serving and wing attacking, while Tupchii offers a more experienced opposite option when the team needs a different rhythm.

The Brazil match in the 2026 VNL showed what the system can look like when the scoring load is distributed. Plotnytskyi led with 19, Tupchii scored 17, Kovalov had 14 and Semeniuk added four blocks. Brazil therefore could not simply load its block toward one attacker.

Serving is an especially important source of separation. Against Portugal at EuroVolley, Ukraine produced eight aces, with Yanchuk accounting for three and Plotnytskyi and Semeniuk two each. The serve also improved the blocking environment by keeping Portugal away from its preferred first-tempo combinations.

Ukraine can also play faster than its height profile initially suggests. Synytsia has increasingly handled the main setting responsibility in the later 2026 cycle, using the middle when reception allows and exploiting the physical range of Plotnytskyi and Yanchuk at the pins. Yevstratov provides another experienced setting option.

The weakness is less about one technical category than about maintaining the same quality when the first contact deteriorates. Romania’s EuroVolley Round-of-16 win showed how quickly Ukraine’s offense could become less efficient when reception and transition were placed under sustained pressure. In the second set of that match Ukraine attacked at 44%, and the team never generated the service pressure needed to reverse the momentum.

The younger opposite Tonkonoh changes the tactical possibilities further. At 214 cm, he provides a contact point and blocking presence unusual even at international level. His 21-point match against Germany during the VNL was an early indication that he can become more than a developmental reserve if his reception-independent scoring continues to mature.

Ukraine therefore does not need to be reduced to one permanent stylistic label. The current group is most effective when serve pressure, a tall block and balanced wing scoring work together. Its ability to reproduce that sequence against the strongest teams over several consecutive matches will determine how far the group can move beyond the quarterfinal level.

Major Honors & Milestones

Competition

Best / Major Results

Olympic Games

No appearance as independent Ukraine

FIVB World Championship

7th: 2022

Volleyball Nations League

7th: 2026; first Finals appearance

CEV European Championship

6th: 1993

CEV European / Golden League

Champions: 2017, 2024

CEV European / Golden League

Runners-up: 2021, 2023

FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup

Bronze: 2023

EuroVolley Modern Knockout Runs

Quarterfinals: 2019, 2023

VNL Debut

10th overall: 2025

Ukraine has not yet won a senior Olympic, World Championship or EuroVolley medal, so its most important achievements are best understood through progression rather than inflated medal totals. The 2017 and 2024 European League titles, the 2022 world quarterfinal and the 2026 VNL Finals are separate milestones in the same broader development of the independent national team.

Notable Players Across Generations

Player

Position

Era / Years

Note

Dmytro Teryomenko

Middle Blocker

2010s–early 2020s

Major middle blocker of the generation that won the 2017 European League and returned Ukraine to the EuroVolley knockout rounds

Horden Brova

Libero

2010s–early 2020s

Long-serving defensive specialist during Ukraine’s re-emergence in European competition

Ian Iereshchenko

Outside Hitter

2010s–early 2020s

Experienced wing scorer from the 2017 European League and 2019 EuroVolley era

Oleh Plotnytskyi

Outside Hitter

2010s–present

Current captain, elite serving outside and central figure in Ukraine’s strongest modern results

Yurii Semeniuk

Middle Blocker

2010s–present

VNL 2026 captain during the early season and long-term middle-blocking reference

Vasyl Tupchii

Opposite

2010s–present

Experienced opposite and recurring scorer across the World Championship and VNL cycles

Illia Kovalov

Outside Hitter

2010s–present

Major wing option through the 2022 World Championship and VNL era

Dmytro Yanchuk

Outside Hitter

2020s–present

Important serving and receiving outside in the current Lozano group

Maksym Tonkonoh

Opposite

Emerging

214 cm young opposite who moved into significant senior responsibility during VNL 2026

Plotnytskyi occupies a particularly important position in the current story. He was already central to Ukraine’s 2019 and 2023 EuroVolley teams before stepping away from national-team play. His 2026 return did not replace the younger generation Lozano had been developing; it added a high-level receiver, server and scorer to it.

Semeniuk provides a different kind of continuity. He carried the captaincy during the earlier part of the 2026 VNL season and remains one of Ukraine’s most established middle blockers even after Plotnytskyi resumed the captain’s role at EuroVolley.

Key Matchups

Poland is the clearest current measuring point. Poland eliminated Ukraine from the 2026 VNL Finals in four sets and then beat Ukraine 3–0 in their EuroVolley pool meeting. Poland finished the European season as continental champion and world No. 1, making the matchup a useful indication of how much separation still exists between Ukraine’s current top-eight ambitions and the very highest international level.

Serbia carries strong recent European context. The 2019 EuroVolley quarterfinal remains one of Ukraine’s most painful near-misses: Serbia won the five-set match by a single point in total and went on to become European champion. The teams have continued to meet in major international competition since then.

Bulgaria has become another relevant regional benchmark. Ukraine’s 3–1 win over the Bulgarians at EuroVolley 2026 came against a team that had reached the 2025 World Championship final and was playing at home in Sofia. It was one of Ukraine’s strongest wins of the continental season.

The 2026 victory over Brazil belongs more to the category of statement result than rivalry. Beating an unbeaten Brazil side in the VNL demonstrated that Ukraine’s ceiling now extends to victories over established global medal contenders when its serve and wing offense are functioning at their best.

Qualification Path & Tournament Cycle

Ukraine did not obtain a direct 2027 World Cup ticket through EuroVolley. Europe’s three continental places went to France, Finland and Slovenia because Poland, the fourth semifinalist and eventual champion, was already qualified as the 2027 host.

That leaves Ukraine in the ranking allocation. Italy and Poland plus 15 continental qualifiers account for 17 of the 32 World Cup places. The remaining 15 are awarded according to the FIVB Men’s World Ranking among teams not yet qualified.

Ukraine’s No. 12 position on October 1 is strong enough to place it well inside that ranking group once already-qualified teams are removed. The distinction between mathematical position and formal confirmation still matters: until FIVB publishes the completed 32-team field, Ukraine should not be described as officially qualified.

The same tournament is central to Olympic qualification. Poland won EuroVolley and secured Europe’s LA28 quota, so Ukraine did not qualify directly from the continental championship. At the 2027 World Cup, the three highest-finishing teams not already qualified for Los Angeles will claim Olympic places.

If Ukraine does not qualify in Poland, the last opportunity comes after the 2028 VNL preliminary phase, when the three highest-ranked still-unqualified men’s teams will complete the Olympic field.

For a national team that has never reached the Olympic tournament under the Ukrainian flag, the next two international seasons therefore carry an unusually clear competitive objective.

Current Status

Ukraine closes the 2026 senior international season at No. 12 in the FIVB World Ranking with 255.62 points. That position is lower than the temporary top-ten place reached during EuroVolley but remains one of the strongest year-end ranking positions in the independent program’s history.

The most important result of the year was the first VNL Finals qualification. Ukraine did not rely on a host place or administrative route: seven preliminary-round victories placed the team seventh and earned the quarterfinal against Poland. The 3–1 defeat ended the run, but seventh in the final table represented another progression from the 10th-place VNL debut a year earlier.

EuroVolley was less complete. Four group-stage wins put Ukraine second in its pool, but Romania’s straight-set Round-of-16 victory prevented a third consecutive modern-era European quarterfinal. The tournament nevertheless showed the value of Plotnytskyi’s return and the continued growth of Yanchuk, Tonkonoh and the younger players around the established core.

Lozano therefore enters the next cycle with more depth than Ukraine had when he took charge. The setter position has several experienced options, Plotnytskyi and Yanchuk offer a strong two-way wing combination, the middle remains physically imposing, and Tonkonoh gives the team an emerging high-contact opposite.

The next benchmark is no longer simply reaching major tournaments. Ukraine now has to convert its ranking and VNL progress into another deep global run, obtain formal qualification for the 2027 World Cup and use that competition as the first remaining opportunity to reach Los Angeles 2028.

Recent Performance Snapshot

Competition / Metric

Ukraine

2022 FIVB World Championship

7th — quarterfinals

2023 EuroVolley

Quarterfinals

2023 FIVB Challenger Cup

Bronze

2024 CEV Golden European League

Champions

2025 VNL

9th in preliminary phase; 10th final standing

2025 World Championship

24th — preliminary phase

2026 VNL Preliminary Phase

7th — 7 wins, 5 losses, 23 points

2026 VNL Finals

Quarterfinals / 7th final standing — first Finals appearance

2026 EuroVolley

Round of 16 — 4–1 pool record before loss to Romania

Current FIVB Ranking

No. 12 — 255.62 points (1 October 2026)

Head Coach

Raúl Lozano

Current Captain

Oleh Plotnytskyi

2027 World Cup

Ranking-allocation position; final formal field pending

LA28

Not yet qualified

The last five seasons have therefore produced several different firsts or bests without a senior major medal: a World Championship quarterfinal, entry into the VNL, a first VNL Finals appearance and a ranking position that keeps Ukraine firmly involved in the next global and Olympic qualification cycles.

FAQ

Who is the head coach of Ukraine’s men’s national volleyball team?

Raúl Lozano is the current head coach. The experienced Argentine took charge in 2024 and remained in the position through the 2026 VNL and EuroVolley campaigns. CEV listed Agustin Briscioli as his assistant at EuroVolley.

Who is the current captain of Ukraine?

Oleh Plotnytskyi is the latest verified captain, with CEV identifying him as Ukraine’s captain during EuroVolley 2026. Yurii Semeniuk captained the national team during the earlier VNL phase while Plotnytskyi was absent or returning, so the two captaincy records refer to different points in the 2026 season rather than a simple source error.

What is Ukraine’s current FIVB World Ranking?

Ukraine is No. 12 with 255.62 points in the October 1, 2026 ranking snapshot. Because FIVB rankings update with official results, the live Volleyball World table should be rechecked whenever the profile is materially updated.

What is Ukraine’s best World Championship result?

Ukraine finished seventh in 2022, reaching the quarterfinals before losing 3–1 to Slovenia. It remains the country’s best men’s World Championship result as an independent nation.

What is Ukraine’s best EuroVolley result?

Ukraine finished sixth in 1993, its first European Championship as an independent national team. The modern team later reached the quarterfinals in both 2019 and 2023.

Has Ukraine ever played Olympic men’s volleyball?

No. Independent Ukraine has not yet qualified for the men’s Olympic volleyball tournament. Ukrainian players who represented the Soviet Union belong to the Soviet national-team record rather than Ukraine’s independent Olympic record.

When did Ukraine first play in the Volleyball Nations League?

Ukraine debuted in 2025 and finished 10th overall. It reached the VNL Finals for the first time one year later, finishing seventh in 2026.

What is Ukraine’s best VNL result?

Ukraine’s best result is seventh place in 2026. The team finished seventh in the preliminary phase, qualified for the Finals for the first time and lost to Poland in the quarterfinals.

Is Ukraine qualified for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup?

The full 32-team men’s field had not yet been formally announced at the time of writing. Ukraine missed the three direct European places at EuroVolley but sits at No. 12 in the FIVB ranking, placing it safely within the practical range for one of the 15 remaining ranking allocations after already-qualified teams are removed.

Is Ukraine qualified for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics?

No. Poland earned Europe’s direct Olympic quota by winning EuroVolley 2026. Ukraine’s remaining routes are a top-three eligible finish at the 2027 global championship or one of the final three ranking places after the 2028 VNL preliminary phase.

<h2
