About Boris Nachev

Boris Nachev is a Bulgarian middle blocker whose development has been closely tied to the rise of a young Bulgarian generation on the international stage. Born in Varna and developed at hometown club VC Cherno More BASK, he was already collecting major youth-national-team medals before establishing himself in Bulgaria’s top division. His early international résumé includes silver at the 2021 U19 World Championship, bronze at the 2022 U21 European Championship and another silver at the 2022 European Youth Olympic Festival. By 2024 he had moved into Bulgaria’s senior national-team program, and in 2025 he was part of the squad that reached the Men’s World Championship final.

His club career has also moved quickly. After five seasons with Cherno More, including a 2024–25 campaign in which he was selected as the Bulgarian league’s best blocker, Nachev joined Sonepar Padova and made the jump to Italy’s SuperLega. A shoulder injury interrupted that first Italian season, but he returned to competitive action late in the campaign. For 2026–27, he moved to JoyVolley Gioia del Colle in Serie A2, where he wears No. 1 and enters the season as one of the club’s middle-blocking options.

Nachev’s listed height requires a small distinction between current official sources. JoyVolley, Pallavolo Padova and CEV list him at 202 cm, while Volleyball World’s current competition profiles list 206 cm. With his current club and CEV agreeing on 202 cm, that is the figure used here. CEV lists a 340 cm spike reach and 325 cm block reach; the secondary database Volleybox lists 350 cm and 335 cm respectively, along with an 85 kg weight and right-handed preference.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Nachev grew up in Varna and experimented with several sports before volleyball became the clear direction. In a 2021 interview given shortly after Bulgaria’s run to silver at the U19 World Championship, he recalled trying tennis and swimming as well as basketball. His father wanted him to be involved in sport, but Nachev said that once he entered a volleyball hall, he understood that volleyball was what he wanted to pursue.

By that interview, the 17-year-old estimated that he had already been playing volleyball for six or seven years. Much of that development took place inside the Cherno More system in Varna. Nachev credited the club with teaching him most of what he knew at that stage of his career, while also highlighting the influence of youth-national-team coaches Martin Stoev and Yulian Tupanov.

His first youth-national-team call-up came after strong performances in Bulgaria’s domestic age-group championship. Nachev recalled that he had played only one or two particularly good matches when a coach approached him after a game and told him he had been selected. The opportunity quickly led to a much larger competitive stage. At the 2021 U19 World Championship, Bulgaria survived five-set matches against Italy and Russia before meeting Poland in the final and taking silver. For Nachev, it was his first tournament of that scale and an early introduction to international volleyball against the strongest players in his age group.

The 2021 Sportal/BNR interview with Nachev captures that period particularly well: he was still a Cherno More prospect, already an international medalist, but focused on helping his hometown club win promotion and continuing to develop rather than treating the youth success as a finished achievement.

Club Career

Nachev’s senior club pathway began at VC Cherno More BASK, where he remained from 2020–21 through 2024–25. The long spell gave him a gradual transition from youth prospect to established senior middle blocker rather than requiring an immediate move away from Varna. In 2021–22, Cherno More won both the NVL Top League and Bulgarian Top League Cup. The club subsequently competed in Bulgaria’s SuperLiga from 2022–23, giving Nachev regular exposure to the country’s highest domestic level while still in his late teens.

His final season in Bulgaria produced an important individual marker. Nachev was selected as the best blocker of the 2024–25 Bulgarian championship, an award that reinforced the part of his game that had become his clearest calling card. The same spring brought his first move abroad: Sonepar Padova signed him for the 2025–26 SuperLega season.

The Move from Varna to SuperLega

Padova represented a significant increase in competitive level. When the club announced Nachev in June 2025, it presented him as a 21-year-old middle blocker coming from five seasons with Cherno More and already carrying substantial youth and senior international experience. Nachev described the move as an opportunity to grow technically and personally in what would be his first SuperLega season.

The transition was complicated by injury. Bulgarian reporting later detailed a shoulder problem that kept him out for a substantial portion of the season and slowed his adaptation to the Italian championship. His playing time increased toward the end of the regular season, and Volleyball World’s complete 2025–26 SuperLega record credits him with 22 points: 14 in attack, six from blocks and two from serve. He finished with a listed 51.85% attacking efficiency.

There were glimpses of what he could provide when given a larger role. On February 22 against Cuneo, Nachev scored six points, including three blocks and an ace. Three days later against Piacenza, he produced eight points with six attacks, one block and one ace. Those matches accounted for much of his scoring during a season shaped more by interrupted availability than by a regular starting role.

A New Opportunity with JoyVolley

Rather than remain with Padova for another year, Nachev moved to JoyVolley Gioia del Colle for 2026–27. JoyVolley officially announced the signing on June 26, 2026, confirming that the Bulgarian middle would compete in Serie A2 Credem Banca and wear No. 1. The club highlighted his size and first-line qualities while viewing the move as another development stage for a player who already had experience in SuperLega and international volleyball.

The move also offers a different competitive situation. Instead of fighting for limited minutes in a SuperLega middle-blocker rotation, Nachev arrives at a club entering a new Serie A2 campaign with Cristian Frumuselu, Sandi Persoglia and Gianluca Fahr among its other options in the middle. As the regular season approached, Nachev was back on court and accumulating preseason playing time, an important detail after the injury issues that had affected both his Padova season and the end of his 2026 national-team summer.

National Team Career

Nachev’s international résumé developed before his senior club career had fully taken shape. Bulgaria’s generation born around the early 2000s became a regular medal contender at youth level, and Nachev was part of several of its major results.

The first major breakthrough came at the 2021 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship, where Bulgaria reached the final and took silver. Nachev later described the tournament as a major step in his development: Bulgaria had to survive demanding matches against Italy and Russia before losing to Poland in the championship match.

Another productive international year followed in 2022. Nachev won bronze with Bulgaria at the European U21 Championship and silver at the European Youth Olympic Festival. CEV records also place him in Bulgaria’s subsequent U22 pathway, while the progression eventually carried him into the senior national team.

Establishing a Place with the Senior Team

By 2024, Nachev was part of Bulgaria’s senior setup and appeared in the Volleyball Nations League. He remained in the national-team picture in 2025, and the biggest result of his career to that point came at the Men’s World Championship in the Philippines. Nachev was registered as Bulgaria’s No. 5 middle blocker in a squad that advanced all the way to the final.

Italy defeated Bulgaria 3–1 in the gold-medal match, but the silver represented Bulgaria’s first Men’s World Championship podium since 2006 and its first appearance in the final since 1970. Nachev’s role was not that of one of Bulgaria’s primary scorers, but being part of the final roster placed another senior international medal alongside the youth honors he had already collected.

He returned for the 2026 VNL wearing No. 5. His actual match workload remained limited: Volleyball World records two points for the tournament, one from attack and one ace, with no block points. The significance of the summer therefore lies more in his continued presence in Gianlorenzo Blengini’s national-team group than in a large statistical contribution.

Nachev was then included in Bulgaria’s preparation and extended list for EuroVolley 2026, but an injury interrupted the campaign. He left the training group in August and ultimately did not appear in Bulgaria’s final 14-player tournament squad. This distinction matters because CEV’s database still associates him with Bulgaria’s EuroVolley 2026 registration and No. 5, while contemporary Bulgarian reporting confirms that the injury kept him out of the final tournament roster.

Playing Style & Strengths

Blocking is the strongest documented theme in Nachev’s technical profile. His selection as the best blocker of the 2024–25 Bulgarian championship came immediately before his move to Italy, providing a more meaningful indicator than simply describing the standard duties of a middle blocker. JoyVolley also highlighted his physical presence and qualities in the front-row fundamentals when introducing him for 2026–27.

At 202 cm according to his current club and CEV profile, Nachev is not unusually tall by modern international middle-blocker standards. That places additional importance on reading, positioning and arriving on time rather than relying only on reach. CEV lists his spike reach at 340 cm and block reach at 325 cm, although secondary databases carry higher figures.

His limited SuperLega sample still shows contributions in all three front-row scoring areas. Of his 22 points for Padova in 2025–26, 14 came from attacks, six from blocks and two from aces. His 51.85% attacking efficiency suggests that he could finish first-tempo opportunities effectively when involved, while the six blocks are particularly relevant because most of those points arrived during a relatively small amount of court time.

Nachev’s serving also gives him another way to affect a rotation. The sample remains too small to characterize him as an elite serving middle, but he recorded aces for Padova and scored Bulgaria’s only serving point attributed to him during the 2026 VNL. In practical terms, his most established identity remains as a blocker with enough attacking and serving contribution to avoid becoming a one-phase player.

The next developmental question is consistency. Injuries reduced his continuity during his first year in Italy and again interrupted his 2026 national-team summer. A healthy Serie A2 season with regular match exposure would give a much clearer picture of how the blocking level that distinguished him in Bulgaria translates across a full Italian campaign.

Major Achievements

Nachev’s honors already span youth international volleyball, senior international competition and domestic club volleyball. His medal record is particularly notable because the 2025 senior World Championship silver followed several podium finishes with Bulgaria’s youth teams rather than appearing as an isolated result.

Where Is Boris Nachev Playing Now?

Boris Nachev plays for JoyVolley Gioia del Colle in Italy’s Serie A2 Credem Banca for the 2026–27 season. The club officially announced him on June 26, 2026 after his SuperLega year with Sonepar Padova and assigned him jersey No. 1. JoyVolley’s middle-blocker group also includes Cristian Frumuselu, Sandi Persoglia and Gianluca Fahr.

His current status is also significant because of the injury that ended his EuroVolley preparations with Bulgaria. By early October, Nachev was back in club match preparation and accumulating minutes in JoyVolley’s preseason program. On October 5, Bulgarian reporting noted that both Nachev and teammate Vladimir Garkov had continued playing during preparation, including a friendly against Union Napoli after JoyVolley’s 4–0 preseason win over BCC Tecbus Castellana Grotte. That provides a more current indication of his availability than the August national-team injury report.

As of October 7, 2026, the Serie A2 regular season has not yet begun. JoyVolley’s first league match is scheduled for October 18 away to Essence Hotels Fano, a fixture that is set to feature several Bulgarian players across the two squads.

Internationally, Nachev remains part of Bulgaria’s broader senior-team picture after participating in the 2026 VNL, although the injury prevented him from completing the summer with the EuroVolley team. His next national-team role will depend in part on health, club form and competition for middle-blocker places within a Bulgarian group that currently includes players such as Alex Grozdanov, Iliya Petkov and Preslav Petkov.
