Player Overview

About Iliya Petkov

Iliya Petkov is a Bulgarian middle blocker whose route to elite volleyball began unusually late. He did not start organized volleyball until he was around 15 or 16, after spending roughly seven years in sports dancing, yet he developed quickly enough to move from his hometown club in Dobrich into championship-winning teams, the Bulgarian senior national side and major European leagues. By 2025, he had become part of the Bulgaria team that reached the FIVB World Championship final, with his blocking, first-tempo attacking and serving all contributing to the run. He finished Bulgaria’s dramatic quarterfinal comeback against the United States with the match-winning attack.

The next phase of his career has taken him deeper into Italian volleyball. After spending 2025–26 with Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, Petkov signed for Vero Volley Monza for 2026–27. The move followed a season in which Volleyball World credited him with 76 SuperLega points, including 53 in attack, 15 from blocks and eight aces. He then remained with Bulgaria through the 2026 VNL and EuroVolley before joining Monza’s preseason preparations.

Petkov’s current 202 cm height is listed by both Volleyball World and Vero Volley, while older competition records sometimes list him at 200 or 201 cm. The 88 kg weight and 350 cm spike reach appear in his official 2023–24 PlusLiga profile, while a 337 cm block reach is also preserved in player databases based on earlier international listings. His current Monza number is 9, while he wore No. 3 for Bulgaria during the 2026 international season.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Petkov grew up in Dobrich on Bulgaria’s Black Sea side, but volleyball was not his first serious sporting activity. In a detailed 2025 interview, he explained that he spent close to seven years training in sports dancing. That background gave him rhythm, coordination, disciplined footwork and comfort controlling his body before he ever began learning middle-blocker movements.

His introduction to volleyball came almost accidentally. Petkov was already in high school, around 15 or 16, when he went with friends to play recreationally in a renovated hall in Dobrich. Coach Petar Penev noticed Petkov and a tall friend as they were leaving and invited them to train. Petkov accepted, and Penev became his first volleyball coach. Penev later recalled that Petkov was starting much later than most developed players but already possessed the coordination and athletic base that made rapid technical progress possible.

There was also a period when volleyball appeared unlikely to become his career. Petkov moved to the Netherlands to study Game Design and Production, working with subjects including digital modeling and drawing. He tried to continue playing by traveling to a semi-professional team in Utrecht, but the journey took close to three hours each way. Eventually Dobrudzha contacted him about returning home, and he left university to resume volleyball in Bulgaria.

That decision effectively restarted his competitive development. Instead of following a conventional path from an elite youth academy through every age category, Petkov had to compress much of his technical growth into his late teenage years and early twenties.

Club Career

Petkov’s senior career began with Dobrudzha 07, the club from his home city. He was part of the team in 2016–17 and won the Bulgarian Cup during that period. His development soon earned a move to Neftochimik Burgas in 2017, beginning the longest continuous club spell of his career.

Neftochimik was particularly important because Petkov was surrounded by established Bulgarian internationals. He has described those four seasons as a major education, citing the influence of experienced players and coaches around him. The results were substantial as well: Neftochimik won three consecutive Bulgarian championships from 2017–18 through 2019–20, while Petkov also collected domestic cup and super-cup titles during the period.

The 2021–22 season took him abroad for the first time, with Saint-Quentin Volley in France. He returned to Bulgaria with Hebar Pazardzhik, adding another Bulgarian Cup and Super Cup in 2022–23. His European competition record also shows Hebar involvement extending into the 2023–24 European campaign before his move to Poland.

In December 2023, Petkov joined PGE GiEK Skra Bełchatów in Poland. PlusLiga records his league spell from December 13, 2023 to April 30, 2024, with 17 appearances, 33 points, nine aces and five block points. The transfer gave him experience in another high-level domestic league before he returned to France with Spacer’s Toulouse Volley for 2024–25.

Italy followed in 2025–26. Petkov joined Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina for his first SuperLega season and produced 76 points in Volleyball World’s competition statistics: 53 attack points, 15 block points and eight aces. His listed attacking efficiency was 58.89%. The season established him in one of the strongest club competitions in world volleyball and was followed by a move to Vero Volley Monza for 2026–27.

When Monza announced Petkov, the club emphasized the combination of blocking presence, attacking efficiency and experience he could add in the middle. Petkov described himself as ambitious, positive and disciplined and framed the move as an opportunity he did not want to miss. The full comments are available in the official Vero Volley announcement of his signing.

Petkov’s overall club path is documented by Vero Volley’s current biography, with the mid-2023–24 move to Skra dated more precisely by PlusLiga and Hebar’s European involvement preserved in the CEV record.

National Team Career

Petkov had already appeared in Bulgaria’s age-group pathway before his senior breakthrough. CEV records include him with Bulgarian youth teams in the 2014 European age-group championship cycle, the 2015 U20/U21 World Championship qualification pathway and 2017 U23 World Championship European qualification.

His senior international debut came in the inaugural Volleyball Nations League in 2018. Bulgaria selected him for the opening tournament in China, and head coach Plamen Konstantinov put the debutant into the starting lineup against China on May 25. Bulgaria won the five-set match 3–2, giving Petkov his first senior appearance on a winning night.

Petkov subsequently became a recurring national-team middle. CEV records him at EuroVolley 2019, 2021 and 2023 before his later appearances in Bulgaria’s newer generation. His national-team role gained much greater visibility at the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship in the Philippines.

One of his strongest matches during that tournament came against Slovenia in the pool stage. Petkov scored 11 points, including five kill blocks, five successful attacks at a 71% success rate and an ace as Bulgaria won a five-set match and secured advancement.

The defining moment arrived in the quarterfinal against the United States. Bulgaria fell two sets behind but recovered to force a tie-break. After the Americans saved three match points, Petkov put away the fourth opportunity to complete a 3–2 comeback. He finished with 10 points, two aces and a 73% attacking success rate. Bulgaria advanced to its first Men’s World Championship semifinal since 2006.

Bulgaria eventually reached the gold-medal match, where Italy won 3–1. Silver nevertheless gave Bulgaria its best Men’s World Championship finish since its previous silver medal in 1970 and became the biggest international achievement of Petkov’s senior career to date.

He remained part of the national team in 2026. Volleyball World lists him as No. 3 during the 2026 VNL, in which he scored 63 points across 12 matches. He then represented Bulgaria at the home EuroVolley tournament in Sofia. CEV identified Petkov as one of only five members of the young Bulgarian squad who entered the event with previous EuroVolley experience. Bulgaria progressed from Pool B but was eliminated by Germany in the round of 16 after losing 3–2 despite taking the opening two sets.

Playing Style & Strengths

Petkov’s role begins with the traditional responsibilities of a middle blocker—closing blocks, creating first-tempo attacking options and forcing opposing middles to respect the center of the net—but his scoring profile also shows meaningful value from the service line.

At 202 cm with a listed 350 cm spike reach, he has enough height and reach to work above the net without being dependent on size alone. His earlier sports-dance training is relevant to how he developed: Petkov himself has credited it with improving coordination, rhythm and footwork, qualities that matter when a middle has to read the setter, move laterally across the net and arrive balanced enough to penetrate with the hands.

The 2025 World Championship provided concrete examples of his efficiency. Against the United States he converted attacks at 73% while adding two aces, and his final swing ended the five-set quarterfinal. Earlier against Slovenia, five of his 11 points came directly from blocks. Those performances show two different ways he can affect a match: reducing attacking space at the net and punishing defenses when the setter can establish the quick attack.

His 2026 VNL numbers reinforce that balance. Of his 63 points, 41 came in attack, 13 from blocks and nine from aces. For a middle blocker, nine service points across the competition are particularly useful because they add scoring pressure during a rotation in which many players at the position are expected mainly to put the ball in play before rotating out of the back row.

Petkov is not a high-volume scorer in the way an opposite or primary outside hitter usually is. His value comes from efficiency, timing and the ability to contribute in several scoring phases with relatively limited attacking volume. When Bulgaria’s passing allows the setter to keep the middle involved, his quick approach can hold opposing blockers centrally and create cleaner one-on-one situations for the pin attackers.

Major Achievements

Petkov’s trophy record is concentrated in his successful Bulgarian club years, while the 2025 World Championship silver stands above the rest of his national-team résumé. Vero Volley’s signing profile lists three Bulgarian league titles, four Bulgarian Cups and four Bulgarian Super Cups from his periods with Dobrudzha, Neftochimik and Hebar.

Personal Life & Interests

Petkov’s interests away from the court reflect the creative route he explored before committing fully to professional volleyball. While studying Game Design and Production in the Netherlands, he took an audio-engineering class taught by a DJ. That experience developed into an interest in producing instrumental hip-hop and rap beats, which he has described as a hobby and a way to relax rather than a public music project.

His family also has a volleyball connection. His sister, Maria Petkova, plays volleyball, something his first coach Petar Penev discussed when recounting Iliya’s development in Dobrich.

The combination of sports dancing, digital design studies, music production and a relatively late entry into volleyball gives Petkov a development story quite different from players who spent almost their entire childhood inside elite volleyball systems. His eventual professional career required him to make a clear choice: he left his studies in the Netherlands when Dobrudzha offered him the chance to return and pursue the sport seriously.

Where Is Iliya Petkov Playing Now?

Petkov is a Vero Volley Monza middle blocker for the 2026–27 Italian SuperLega season. The club officially announced his signing on June 8, 2026 after his year with Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, and subsequently assigned him jersey No. 9.

His arrival with the club’s full group was delayed by Bulgaria’s EuroVolley campaign. After returning from national-team duty, Petkov made his first Monza preseason appearance in the October 3 training match against Allianz Milano. That was his first match action for the club following the international season.

As of October 7, 2026, Monza is still in preseason rather than regular-season SuperLega competition. The club’s league schedule begins away to newly promoted Tinet Prata di Pordenone on October 18, followed by its first home league match against Verona on October 25.

Internationally, Petkov remained an active Bulgaria player throughout 2026, competing in both the VNL and EuroVolley with No. 3. Bulgaria’s latest major tournament ended in the EuroVolley round of 16 on September 19, when Germany recovered from two sets down to win 3–2 in Sofia.
