About Aleksandar Nikolov

Aleksandar Nikolov is a Bulgarian outside hitter for Cucine Lube Civitanova and the Bulgaria men’s national team. A tall, high-volume attacker with a powerful jump serve and a major role in serve reception, he has developed from a standout youth international into one of Bulgaria’s primary scorers. His career has already included an historic freshman season at Long Beach State, four seasons with Lube, a 2025 FIVB World Championship silver medal and major scoring performances at both club and international level.

In 2026, Nikolov extended his contract with Lube through 2029 after finishing the 2025–26 SuperLega Regular Season as its leading scorer. His international workload was just as significant: he led the 2026 Volleyball Nations League in scoring, then entered EuroVolley 2026 as one of Bulgaria’s central attacking options. He now begins the 2026–27 club season alongside his younger brother Simeon, who joined Lube as a setter during the summer.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Nikolov was born in Tours, France, while his father, Vladimir Nikolov, was playing professionally abroad. Volleyball was already part of everyday family life. Vladimir became one of the defining Bulgarian players of his generation, represented the national team at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and later served as its captain. Aleksandar’s mother, Maya, also played volleyball professionally.

Although born in France, Aleksandar developed as a player in Bulgaria and attended Vasil Levski Sport School in Sofia. He played for Levski Sofia and progressed through Bulgaria’s youth national-team system, where his combination of height, serving pressure and attacking range was evident well before his senior breakthrough.

His youth international record was substantial. Bulgaria won silver at the 2019 European U17 Championship, and Nikolov later helped the country reach the final of the 2021 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship. He was selected as one of the tournament’s best outside hitters. In 2022, Bulgaria added medals at the European Youth Olympic Festival and age-group European Championships, while Nikolov continued accumulating individual recognition as both an attacker and server.

The family connection remained important without defining his entire career. Nikolov has spoken about watching his father compete at the Olympics and wanting to experience the same level himself. His younger brother Simeon later emerged as an international setter, eventually joining Aleksandar in Bulgaria’s senior lineup and, from 2026–27, at Lube.

Club Career

Levski Sofia

Nikolov’s senior club path began with Levski Sofia, the club where he also developed at youth level. His time in Bulgaria gave him early exposure to senior volleyball, but his next move was unusual for an elite European prospect: instead of moving immediately to a major professional league, he chose NCAA volleyball in the United States.

Long Beach State and a Historic Freshman Season

Nikolov joined Long Beach State for the 2022 season and immediately became the team’s leading offensive player. He finished his only college season with 468 kills in 101 sets, averaging 4.63 kills per set while hitting .386. He also recorded 59 service aces, 138 digs and 61 total blocks.

Those numbers were notable on their own, but the broader significance came from how quickly he produced them. Nikolov became the first freshman in AVCA history to win National Collegiate Player of the Year. He was also named AVCA National Collegiate Newcomer of the Year, earned First-Team All-America recognition and collected Big West Freshman of the Year honors.

His serving was already a major weapon. The 59 aces ranked second in Long Beach State’s single-season record book at the time and were the most ever recorded by a freshman for the program. Offensively, his 4.63 kills per set led the Big West and placed him among the NCAA’s leading attackers.

Long Beach State reached the 2022 NCAA championship match, where Hawaii won the national title. Nikolov was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team, closing a college season that had effectively turned him from an international prospect into a player ready for a major professional contract.

He did not return for a second NCAA season. In July 2022, Long Beach State announced that Nikolov had signed professionally with Cucine Lube Civitanova.

Cucine Lube Civitanova

Lube brought Nikolov to Italy for the 2022–23 season, signing a player who was still only 18 but had already been a senior Bulgarian international and the top individual award winner in NCAA men’s volleyball.

His first seasons in Civitanova required a broader skill set than simply finishing attacks. Playing outside hitter in SuperLega meant carrying a significant serve-reception workload against elite servers while also being expected to terminate difficult balls from the front row and back row. Over time, he grew from a young rotation option into one of Lube’s most important offensive players.

The 2024–25 season produced his first major senior club trophy with Lube. In January 2025, Civitanova defeated Rana Verona in five sets to win the Coppa Italia. Nikolov scored 16 points in the final, including stretches in which Lube used him in an opposite-like attacking role as the match developed.

Lube also reached the SuperLega championship series in 2024–25, finishing runner-up. The following season brought another Scudetto final and a much larger individual role for Nikolov.

During the 2025–26 Regular Season, he scored 450 points to finish as SuperLega’s leading scorer. Across the complete league campaign, Volleyball World recorded 643 points: 531 in attack, 43 from blocks and 69 from service. Those totals illustrate the breadth of his scoring profile. He was not simply accumulating kills through volume; serving and front-row blocking added more than 100 direct points.

Lube returned to the championship series but finished runner-up to Sir Susa Scai Perugia. In the decisive third match of the final, Nikolov scored a match-high 25 points even as Perugia completed the series victory.

His performances led to a longer commitment from the club. In June 2026, Lube announced that Nikolov had extended his contract through 2029. The agreement made him one of the central long-term pieces of the roster rather than a young player approaching the end of an initial development cycle.

A Short 2026 Asian Club Championship Assignment

After the Italian season, Nikolov also appeared for Foolad Sirjan Iranian at the 2026 AVC Men’s Champions League. The short-term reinforcement role did not replace his Lube contract; it was a separate post-season competition assignment.

He scored 40 points across three matches, including 33 attack points and six aces. Foolad reached the final and finished runner-up to Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi. The tournament added another competitive environment to a year in which Nikolov moved almost continuously from the Italian club season into Asian club competition and then Bulgaria’s international schedule.

National Team Career

Nikolov entered Bulgaria’s senior national-team structure unusually early. He made his senior debut in January 2021 during European Championship qualification while still primarily known as a youth international. By the 2022 Volleyball Nations League, he had moved into a much larger role and was already becoming one of Bulgaria’s principal attacking options.

His development at senior level continued alongside youth tournaments. At the 2023 FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship, Bulgaria won bronze while Nikolov finished as the tournament’s leading scorer and leading server. That combination — heavy attacking volume and high-impact serving — would become a consistent feature of his senior game as well.

The major national-team breakthrough came at the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship in the Philippines. Bulgaria reached the final and won silver, returning to the World Championship podium and playing in the title match for the first time in roughly half a century.

Nikolov was the tournament’s dominant scorer statistically. He finished with 173 points, 67 more than the next player in the scoring ranking. His 154 attack points were also the highest total in the tournament. He was subsequently selected as one of the outside hitters on the World Championship Dream Team.

The result also created a distinctive family storyline. Simeon Nikolov ran Bulgaria’s offense at setter and finished first in the tournament’s setter statistics, while Aleksandar carried much of the scoring load from outside hitter. Bulgaria therefore reached a World Championship final with two brothers occupying central roles in its offensive structure.

Nikolov maintained that scoring responsibility in the 2026 Volleyball Nations League. He accumulated 278 points, including 247 attacks, 11 blocks and 20 aces. He finished the preliminary phase as the competition’s leading scorer and leading attacker, with Bulgaria recording seven wins and 20 points before narrowly missing the Finals.

EuroVolley 2026 followed in September. Bulgaria advanced from its group with four victories in five matches, including a five-set win over Poland. Through the pool phase, Nikolov led the tournament with 117 points and also headed the attacking statistics, adding 10 aces and four blocks to his offensive total.

Bulgaria’s run ended in the round of 16 against Germany. The Bulgarians won the first two sets before Germany recovered to take the match 3–2. Nikolov scored 23 points and again led the match in scoring.

Playing Style & Strengths

Nikolov is an attack-first outside hitter whose game is built around the ability to score at high volume without being limited to one rotation or one type of set. His height and reach allow him to contact the ball above many opposing blocks, while his arm speed gives him options both when hitting hard through the seam and when attacking from deeper behind the three-meter line.

The scale of his attacking responsibility is reflected in several different competitions. He recorded 468 kills in a single NCAA season, 154 attack points at the 2025 World Championship, 531 across the complete 2025–26 SuperLega campaign and another 247 during the 2026 VNL. These are not isolated high-scoring matches; they show a player repeatedly trusted with a large share of his team’s offensive workload.

His back-row attack is especially important. Bulgaria and Lube can keep Nikolov involved even when he rotates away from the front row, using pipe and other back-row combinations to preserve pressure through all six rotations. That makes it harder for opposing blockers to focus only on the front-row pins.

Serving is the other major direct-scoring component of his game. Nikolov produced 59 aces during his Long Beach State season, 69 service points across the 2025–26 SuperLega campaign and 20 more during the 2026 VNL. His jump serve can create outright points, but its tactical value also comes from pushing opponents away from the net and reducing the number of quick attacking options available to the opposing setter.

As an outside hitter, however, his role is broader than that of a pure terminal scorer. He must remain available in serve reception and transition before taking a large number of attacking swings. The challenge is therefore not simply generating power; it is maintaining attack efficiency after passing, defending and repeating high-intensity jumps over long matches.

His size also gives him value at the net. Nikolov is capable of taking away significant space as a blocker, particularly against opposing right-side attackers, while his reach gives him an advantage on broken plays and high balls that require an improvised solution.

The most important development across his Lube years has been the ability to combine these tools within a complete outside-hitter workload. His scoring totals attract attention, but his long-term value depends on sustaining that production while handling the reception, transition and defensive responsibilities that separate an elite outside hitter from a specialist attacker.

Family & Personal Life

The Nikolov family has an unusually deep connection to high-level volleyball. Aleksandar’s father, Vladimir Nikolov, played professionally across Europe and represented Bulgaria for many years, including appearances at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics. Bulgaria reached the semifinals in London before finishing fourth.

Aleksandar has explained that watching his father’s Olympic career helped shape one of his own major ambitions. Rather than describing the Olympics as an abstract career milestone, he grew up with a direct example of what competing there meant and heard Vladimir describe the Games as one of the defining experiences of his career.

His mother, Maya, is also a former volleyball player. The family therefore provided a sporting environment in which the demands of professional volleyball — travel, training, competition and recovery — were familiar rather than unusual.

The most visible family connection today is with Simeon Nikolov. Simeon is three years younger and developed as a setter rather than an outside hitter. By 2025, the brothers were starting together for Bulgaria during a World Championship silver-medal run. In 2026, that partnership extended to club volleyball when Simeon signed with Cucine Lube Civitanova.

Their jersey choices at Lube also carry a family connection. Aleksandar wears No. 11, a number associated with Vladimir Nikolov during his career in Italy. When Simeon joined Lube, he retained No. 1 because No. 11 was already being worn by his older brother.

Where Is Aleksandar Nikolov Playing Now?

As of September 30, 2026, Aleksandar Nikolov plays for Cucine Lube Civitanova in the Italian SuperLega and wears jersey No. 11.

His position at the club is unusually secure for a player still in his early twenties. Lube announced in June 2026 that his contract had been extended through 2029, adding another year to an agreement that had already been scheduled to run through 2028.

The extension followed his most productive SuperLega season to date. Nikolov was the leading scorer of the 2025–26 Regular Season with 450 points and helped Lube reach a second consecutive league championship series.

He is also an active member of the Bulgaria Men’s National Volleyball Team, wearing No. 23 at EuroVolley 2026. Bulgaria’s European Championship campaign ended against Germany in the round of 16 on September 22, after which Nikolov returned to Civitanova. Lube scheduled its returning national-team players to rejoin full team training from September 29 as preparations for the 2026–27 season moved into their final phase.

The new club season has an additional family dimension: Simeon Nikolov is now part of the same Lube roster at setter, making the brothers club teammates as well as national-team teammates.

Recent Performance Snapshot

Nikolov’s last twelve months have combined unusually heavy scoring loads across several different competitions.

The common thread is workload. Nikolov has been asked to remain a primary scorer regardless of whether he is playing in SuperLega, a short club tournament or the national team. His ability to maintain attacking production while moving between these environments is one of the clearest indicators of his current role.
